The semester had ended, and with it, the daily rush of college life. Poornima was now spending more time in the haveli, helping her sweet-tempered mother-in-law with the household work.
One afternoon, as Poornima was arranging the silver plates in the kitchen, her mother-in-law called her with a soft smile.
“Beta, Teej festival is coming. For a married woman, it is very auspicious. You must keep the fast and dress like a new bride.”
From a neatly folded bundle, she brought out a rich crimson saree, embroidered with delicate gold thread, along with matching bangles, anklets, and a small velvet box containing a shimmering bindi.
Poornima’s eyes lit up. “It’s beautiful, Maa.”
She bent down respectfully, touching her mother-in-law’s feet. The older woman blessed her warmly, placing her hands over Poornima’s head. “May your husband always keep you happy.”
Both smiled at each other, sharing a moment of quiet affection.

That evening, Veeresh was in his study, going through some papers. Poornima entered with a glass of warm milk.
“Results will come soon,” he said without looking up.
She nodded. “Yes. I’m waiting.” She placed the milk beside him. “Tomorrow is the Teej festival… do come home early.”
He looked up at her then, his dark eyes catching the dim lamp light. “I’ll come soon.” His lips curved into a slow, mischievous smile. “But before that… I want to eat you.”
Her cheeks burned instantly. “Veeresh…” she whispered, lowering her gaze.
Before she could escape, his hand caught her wrist, tugging her close until she stumbled against his chest. His scent—spice and smoke—wrapped around her as his arms closed in.
“Stay,” he murmured, pulling her to lie beside him.
She hesitated, but his grip was firm yet gentle. Finally, she relaxed into him. His palm rested protectively on her waist as he closed his eyes.
“Sleep like this,” he whispered, his voice a deep rumble. “Happily. With me.”
And that night, they did.
