Chapter 20: Between Hope and Fear
Veeresh stood in front of the mirror, adjusting the cuffs of his white shirt. The black pant sat perfectly, neat and formal—everything about him looked composed.
But inside, he wasn’t.
As he picked up his watch, her words from the night before echoed in his mind.
Her tears.
Her arms around him.
The way she had slept on his chest, trusting him—if only for a few hours.
“She hasn’t accepted me,” he thought.
“But she depends on me… at least a little.”
That thought alone made his heart feel lighter than it had in weeks.
While walking out, he paused for a second, remembering her voice that morning.
“I’ll come with you to your office party.”
A small smile tugged at his lips, immediately followed by nervousness.
“What if she changes her mind?” he wondered.
“What if she backs out at the last moment?”
He tried to focus on work as he rode to the office, but his thoughts kept drifting back to her. Every signal light, every step toward the building felt heavier than usual.
“I hope she comes,” he told himself quietly.
“Not because of the party… but because she chose to.”
He knew one thing clearly—this wasn’t love yet, not forgiveness, not acceptance.
It was hope.
Fragile.
Uncertain.
But alive.
And for the first time since the mandap, Veeresh walked into his office not burdened by guilt alone—but carrying a careful, trembling hope that tonight, she might stand beside him by choice.
