Chapter 33: What They Chose to Keep

Chennai welcomed them back with familiar roads and quieter hearts.

The city felt different now—not heavy, not sharp. Just… steady.

A few days later, Poornima’s results came out.

She stared at the screen for a long moment, not trusting her eyes.

“I cleared,” she whispered.

Then louder, breathless—
“Veeresh, I cleared!”

She ran to him and hugged him tightly, laughing and crying at the same time. Veeresh wrapped his arms around her, relief and pride flooding his chest.

“I knew you would,” he said softly.

She pulled back only for a second—and then hugged him again, stronger this time.

Veeresh kissed her forehead gently, lingering there like a blessing.

That evening, he walked toward her holding a small box.

“Poornima,” he said quietly.

She opened it.

Inside were her gold earrings.

Her breath caught.

“The ones you gave me,” he said.
“I’m sorry it took time.”

Her eyes filled.

“You never left me,” Veeresh continued, his voice heavy with emotion.
“You stood by me even when you were angry. You never demanded anything. You stayed with me in that lodge, trusted me enough to come to Chennai, helped me rebuild my life.”

His throat tightened.

“And I… I never helped you the way I should have.”

She shook her head immediately.

“Don’t say that,” she said firmly.
“You held me when I was broken. You came with me to therapy. You stayed. Even now—I’m still trying to forgive you.”

He nodded, understanding.

“Take all the time you need,” he said softly.
“I’ll wait.”

Something unspoken passed between them then.

Veeresh leaned in and kissed her.

This time, it wasn’t hesitant.
It wasn’t unsure.

It was deep.
Passionate.
Full of everything they hadn’t said—pain, gratitude, longing, hope.

Poornima kissed him back, equally present, equally certain in that moment.

When they finally pulled apart, both were smiling—soft, genuine smiles.

Nothing was erased.
Nothing was rushed.

But standing there in their small Chennai home, holding the past gently instead of fighting it—

They knew one thing for sure:

They hadn’t just survived.

They had chosen each other.
