Chapter 39: A Love That Refused to Break
Veeresh sat beside the hospital bed, his fingers trembling as they wrapped around Poornima’s cold hand.
The machines hummed softly, cruel in their calm.
“Please don’t leave me…” he whispered, his forehead resting against her knuckles.
“I failed you, I know. I failed you so badly.”
His voice broke completely.
“But you are my most important thing, Poornima.
You are my peace.
My home.”
Tears fell freely, soaking the white bedsheet.
“I found happiness with you,” he cried.
“Real happiness… after everything.”
He leaned closer, his lips brushing her hand.
“Please… just once… come back to me, meri jaan,” he sobbed.
“If you leave, I will die. I swear.”
Footsteps echoed behind him.
His family had come.
The moment they spoke, poison filled the room.
“For her, you disowned us?” his mother said bitterly.
“She didn’t help you. She ruined you.”
Veeresh stood up slowly.
Enough.
“She helped me even when she hated me,” he said, his voice steady but deadly.
“You know nothing about what she did for me.”
He turned to face them, eyes red, unblinking.
“After we left this house, we stayed in a lodge.
She gave her gold earrings—the ones her mother gave her—without hesitation.”
His voice trembled, but he didn’t stop.
“We went to Chennai.
She had bought a house long back—with her own hard work.
We lived there.”
He took a breath.
“I got a job because she believed in me.
She rebuilt her life, cleared her exams, joined RBI.”
His eyes burned.
“We had a beautiful life.
A peaceful life.”
His voice rose.
“And YOU spoiled everything.”
Silence followed.
“She is mine,” Veeresh said quietly, fiercely.
“I love her.”
He pointed toward the door.
“Leave.
All of you.”
His voice hardened like steel.
“And remember this—
you will answer for every tear she shed.”
No one argued.
They walked away.
Veeresh sat back beside her.
He held her hand again, tighter this time, as if anchoring her to life.
“You’re strong,” he whispered.
“You survived everything. Don’t let this take you away.”
He kissed her forehead gently.
“I will wait here,” he promised.
“As long as it takes.”
Outside, the night deepened.
Inside the ICU, love stood guard—
refusing to let go.
