Chapter 23 – The Quiet Promise
Poornima sat on the edge of the bed, her hands folded in her lap, the room glowing softly with warm light. The palace outside was alive with celebration, but here—everything felt hushed, intimate, almost fragile.
The door opened.
Veeresh walked in quietly, no crown, no sword—just the man she had known all her life and the husband she had become bound to that day.
He stopped in front of her and opened his palm.
Nestled there were antique gold bangles, delicate yet strong, carrying the weight of generations.
“These are my mom’s,” he said softly. “She told me… the day I get married, they belong to my wife.”
Poornima’s eyes softened instantly.
He slipped the bangles onto her wrist with care, as if touching something sacred, then bent and kissed her forehead gently.
She smiled—small, genuine, full.
“Beautiful, Veer,” she whispered.
He exhaled, a smile tugging at his lips, relief and emotion mingling in his eyes.
Slowly, respectfully, he helped her remove the heavy jewelry—earrings, necklace, the layers that marked ceremony. His touch was careful, almost reverent, never hurried.
Then he paused.
“These,” he said quietly, glancing at her chooda and waist chain, “never remove them.”
She looked up at him, amused.
“If you do,” he added with mock seriousness, “you’ll bear consequences.”
She raised an eyebrow.
He continued, voice dropping, honest and intense, “I want you to wear them until my breath stops.”
Before the weight of those words could settle—
Slap.
Not hard. Not angry.
Just very Poornima.
“Today we got married,” she said, eyes shining. “And you’re already talking about death? We still have life, Veeresh. A whole life.”
She grabbed his collar before he could react, pulled him toward her, and kissed him—firm, sure, full of years she had waited without knowing why.
For a second, he froze.
Then he smiled into the kiss and responded, holding her like he had always belonged there.
When they finally parted, his forehead rested against hers.
“You’re my Rani sa,” he murmured.
And for the first time since destiny had begun pulling its threads—
There was no past to protect from.
No future to fear.
Just two souls, finally home.
