Chapter 29: What He Chose to Give
Veeresh walked toward the cupboard without saying a word.
Poornima watched him, her heart still racing from everything they had just shared—hurt, forgiveness, closeness. He opened a small wooden box and took something out carefully, as if it mattered more than its weight.
A waist chain and a pair of anklets—simple, elegant, quietly intimate.
He turned to her.
“I bought these a long time ago,” he said softly. “But I never felt right giving them to Shilpa.”
Poornima looked at him, surprised.
“My heart never said yes,” he continued. “But today… it does.”
He stepped closer, gently adjusting her dupatta, careful and respectful, his touch slow—asking, not claiming. He fastened the waist chain around her with steady hands, his forehead resting briefly against her as if grounding himself.
“This,” he said quietly, “is for you.”
He bent slightly and pressed a soft kiss just above the chain—not rushed, not demanding—only reverent.
Poornima’s breath caught.
Veeresh helped her sit on the edge of the bed and knelt in front of her, sliding the light anklets onto her feet one by one. His touch was warm, almost ceremonial.
He kissed her feet gently, his voice low but playful.
“Never remove these,” he said, a faint smile appearing. “There will be consequences.”
Poornima blinked—then laughed, a soft giggle escaping her, breaking the intensity.
“You’re impossible,” she said, still smiling.
Veeresh stood up, relief and happiness visible on his face.
“No,” he said, brushing her cheek lightly. “I’m finally sure.”
She looked at the anklets, then at him.
For the first time, the things he gave her didn’t feel like symbols of marriage or duty.
They felt like choice.
And that made all the difference.
