Chapter 33: A Morning That Felt Like Belonging
Morning light slipped gently into the room.
Poornima woke first.
For a moment, she stayed still—aware of Veeresh’s arm around her waist, heavy and warm. Carefully, she tried to move, afraid of waking him.
He didn’t let go.
Instead, his grip tightened slightly, pulling her back. Before she could protest, he leaned in and kissed her—deep, sure, unhesitating.
She froze for a second, surprised by the suddenness.
Then she kissed him back.
Her breath caught; she tapped his shoulder lightly, trying to pull away.
“Veeresh…” she whispered, breathless.
He smiled against her lips, eyes half-open now, amused and content. He tickled her lightly, teasing, until she laughed despite herself.
“Stop, please,” she said, laughing, pushing his hand away.
He let her go.
Poornima went to freshen up, her cheeks warm, her heart lighter than it had ever been in the mornings of her past.
She changed into a saree, tying it carefully. Veeresh came up behind her and gently tied the blouse string, his touch calm and familiar. Then, without a word, he applied sindur along her hairline—slow, deliberate, certain.
She closed her eyes for a second.
Downstairs, the house woke up fully.
Poornima moved into the kitchen, preparing breakfast while the kids gathered around—sleepy, noisy, alive. She helped them with their bags, adjusted collars, reminded them gently.
“Eat properly, Rudy,” she said softly.
Rudraksh nodded seriously.
She kissed each child on the forehead—Siya, Samarth, William, Charles, Mannat, and Rudra—one by one.
“Bye,” she said warmly.
Veeresh came down as she finished. They sat together for breakfast, sharing a quiet moment before the day pulled them apart.
“I’ll go to the village,” Veeresh said, standing up. “Take a round.”
She nodded.
“Okay.”
He looked at her once more—really looked—then smiled and left.
Poornima stood there for a moment, listening to the sounds of the house, feeling something unfamiliar and beautiful settle in her chest.
This morning didn’t feel borrowed.
It felt like it belonged to her.
