Chapter 22: When Roles Reverse

Ramir looked at Veeresh closely, the smile on his face fading into concern.

“Uncle… are you alright? Is there something you want to share with us?”

The question was simple. The care behind it wasn’t.

Veeresh felt something shift inside him. How did these kids sense it so easily? he wondered. He looked away for a moment, then back at them—three pairs of honest eyes, waiting without judgment.

“I’m worried,” he admitted finally. “About how to approach her without hurting her. Society’s questions… her dignity… everything.”

He paused, voice quieter now.

“I’m divorced. And I don’t want to be left alone again like before.”

Rudraksh didn’t hesitate.

“Uncle, you’re right to think about all this,” he said. “But without risk, there is nothing. People will talk. They will taunt. That’s how it is.”

He leaned forward, seriousness settling in.

“But if you truly love someone, you won’t be afraid. You’ll take a stand.”

Rudra continued, words firm but gentle.

“Love is care. Love is respect. Love is being there for each other—even when it’s uncomfortable.”

Ramir nodded. “I don’t know what happened in your past. But this is different. Everything won’t be the same. You won’t repeat the same mistakes.”

Mannat smiled softly. “Fly, Uncle. Give yourself a chance.”

For a moment, Veeresh couldn’t speak. His throat tightened—not with fear, but with something dangerously close to relief.

Then Rudraksh laughed suddenly.

“You’re supposed to give us advice.”

Ramir joined in. “And here we are, advising you.”

Mannat laughed too, shaking her head. “Life is funny, no?”

Veeresh chuckled, a real laugh, one that reached his eyes. “Looks like I found my mentors late in life.”

In that moment, surrounded by laughter and unexpected wisdom, Veeresh realized something important:

He wasn’t alone anymore.

Not in fear.

Not in hope.

And maybe—just maybe—he was finally ready to choose courage over caution.
