Chapter 29: Distance With Purpose

Veeresh told her in the afternoon.

“I’ll be going to London,” he said gently.

For a second, something tightened inside Poornima’s chest. They had just begun—just allowed themselves to breathe in the same direction. Distance felt unfair.

But she didn’t let it show.

He noticed anyway.

He reached for her hand, his thumb brushing lightly over her knuckles. “I’m not going to run away,” he said softly. “I’m going to talk about us.”

She looked at him then.

“Kayan and Kavya,” he continued. “They deserve honesty. My ex-wife deserves clarity too. I want to build this right.”

He hesitated. “You’re not angry… right?”

Poornima shook her head. “No. They need to know.”

Relief crossed his face—pure, unhidden.

He smiled, leaning forward, and kissed her cheek. It was brief. Careful. A promise, not a claim.

She smiled back.

That evening, the airport buzzed with movement and announcements. Veeresh stood with Poornima and the children, his travel bag slung over his shoulder.

Rudraksh nudged him. “Uncle… you can smile.”

Ramir laughed. “Yeah, why so serious?”

Mannat grinned. “We know Rudra is your favourite.”

Veeresh raised his hands defensively. “I like all of you.”

“We know,” Mannat said, teasing. “But you like Rudra.”

Rudraksh rolled his eyes. “Stop teasing him. Let him go.”

Veeresh laughed softly, then turned to Poornima.

“I’ll call,” he said.

“I know,” she replied.

No dramatic goodbyes. No clinging.

Just trust.

As he walked toward the gate, Veeresh turned once more. Poornima stood still, composed, steady—exactly as she always had been.

And as he took his seat on the plane, fastening his seatbelt, he realized something profound:

This distance wasn’t separation.

It was intention.
