Chapter 40: Maroon Again

Veeresh was happy in a way that made his chest feel light.

He handed her the box quietly. Poornima opened it—and froze for a second.

A maroon saree.

Simple. Elegant. Paired with matching bangles, understated, thoughtful. The color carried memories—school corridors, a farewell day, a photograph frozen in time.

She looked up at him and smiled, eyes soft. “You remember everything.”

“Some things,” he said gently, “never leave.”

She went inside to get ready. When she came out, the moment held its breath.

The maroon draped her perfectly—graceful, mature, confident. Not the girl she once was, but the woman she had become. Veeresh stepped closer and murmured something teasing in her ear.

She swatted his arm lightly. “Behave, shameless.”

He laughed, unabashed, and held her hand—firm, certain.

They went to the court quietly. No noise. No spectacle. Just intent.

Ramir stood tall, pride evident in his eyes. Mannat wiped a smile that threatened to turn emotional. Rudra grinned openly, unable to contain his happiness.

Papers were signed. Names written. Choices made.

Veeresh tied the mangalsutra around Poornima’s neck with steady hands. He applied sindur to her forehead with reverence, not haste. Poornima smiled—calm, assured, complete.

He kissed her cheeks softly. “My wife.”

She didn’t correct him.

Laughter followed. Hugs. A few happy tears. No speeches—just presence.

As they walked out together, hand in hand, sunlight caught the maroon fabric and the quiet certainty on their faces. They got into the car, leaving the court behind, heading toward the penthouse.

Not toward a fairytale.

Toward a life chosen—
with awareness, with courage,
and with love that had learned how to last.
