Chapter 42: Under the Same Moon
The house slowly grew quiet.
Doors closed softly, lights dimmed, footsteps faded into the comfort of night. For the first time, nothing felt rushed. Nothing felt uncertain.
Poornima stepped out onto the balcony and saw Veeresh standing there, a cigarette between his fingers, lost in thought. She didn’t raise her voice. She didn’t scold.
She just said his name.
“Veeresh.”
That was enough.
He turned, saw her expression, and without a word, crushed the cigarette and tossed it away. “You scare me, Poons,” he said lightly.
She smiled—small, knowing. “Good.”
They sat on the swing together, the slow creak matching the calm rhythm of the night. Veeresh leaned into her, resting his head on her shoulder like it was the most natural place in the world.
“I never imagined this,” he said quietly. “Not in my forties. Not after everything. But… I’m happy. Settled.”
Poornima rested her cheek against his head, her fingers threading gently through his hair. “Some things take time to arrive,” she said. “But they arrive when we’re ready.”
He looked up at her, eyes softer than she’d ever seen them, and kissed her—unhurried, warm, full of gratitude. She kissed him back, just as gently.
They didn’t speak after that.
They sat there together, watching the moon hang steady in the sky—two lives that had known loss, patience, and restraint, now sharing silence without fear.
No promises spoken.
No doubts lingering.
Just the quiet certainty that love, when it comes at the right time, doesn’t shake you.
It steadies you.
