Chapter: Quiet Poison, Calm Storm

Jealousy is rarely loud.
It whispers.

Ridhima watched them from a distance—the way Veeresh reached for Poornima’s glass before it emptied, the way Poornima adjusted his collar without thinking, the way the house moved around them as if they were the axis. It burned. Slow. Acidic.

Later that afternoon, when the house was quieter, Ridhima found Rudra alone on the balcony, scrolling through his phone, headphones dangling around his neck.

“You’re very mature for your age,” she began softly, like a compliment.

Rudra looked up, polite. “Thank you, aunty.”

She leaned on the railing beside him. “I just hope… you don’t get hurt later.”

He frowned slightly. “Hurt?”

She sighed, carefully measured. “You know, Veeresh loves you, of course. He’s kind. But… at the end of the day, you’re not really his son. Blood matters, beta. People change. Priorities change.”

Rudra listened. Quiet. Still.

“He already has his own children,” she continued, lowering her voice. “Kayan and Kavya. One day, when things get complicated, he might choose them. I just didn’t want you to be blindsided.”

There was a pause.

Then Rudra smiled.

“Thank you for telling me, aunty.”

Relief flashed across Ridhima’s face—misread as victory.

She walked away with a thought curling darkly in her chest:
Veeresh will be mine again. And Poornima will walk out the same way she walked in.

That night, dinner was… normal.

Too normal.

Laughter floated across the table. Mannat argued with Ramir about dessert. Kayan and Kavya discussed college plans. Poornima served calmly, unaware. Veeresh cracked a joke about biryani—again.

Rudra ate quietly.

After dinner, as everyone began to disperse, Rudra stood up.

“Dad,” he said casually, wiping his hands. “I need to talk to you. About my career.”

Veeresh looked up immediately. “Of course,” he said without hesitation. “Come.”

They walked toward Veeresh’s study, the door closing softly behind them.

The house continued to hum with life outside.

Inside, something important was about to be said.
