Chapter 64 — A Heartbeat We Didn’t Know We Were Waiting For
The morning felt different.
Peaceful. Lighter.
After the passion of the night before, there was a quiet happiness between us that words didn’t need. The kids were cheerful, laughter filling the house again, and I kept smiling for no clear reason—until I noticed it.
The delay.
At first, I brushed it aside. Stress, emotions, everything we had been through. But something inside me knew. My hands trembled when I checked, my breath stuck in my chest—
Positive.
I sat there for a long moment, staring at it. Happiness rushed in first, warm and overwhelming. Then fear followed quietly behind it.
I was forty.
What would people say?
Would my body be strong enough?
I didn’t tell anyone. Not even Veeresh.
I went to the hospital alone.
The doctor examined me carefully, asked questions, checked reports, and then smiled.
“You’re fit, Poornima. There’s nothing to worry about. Take care, rest well, and enjoy this phase.”
Enjoy.
That word stayed with me the whole way back.
That night, Veeresh was sitting on the bed, relaxed, unaware that his world was about to change again. I walked to him slowly and took his hand. He looked up, confused but gentle.
“Poons?” he asked softly.
I didn’t speak. I placed his hand on my belly.
His eyes widened, his breath caught.
“Veer,” I whispered, my voice shaking with emotion, “Papa’s dream is finally becoming true.”
For a second, he didn’t move.
Then he smiled—the kind of smile that breaks into tears.
“Really?” he asked, almost afraid to believe it.
I nodded.
He pulled me close, kissing my forehead, my cheeks, my lips—nothing rushed, nothing wild, just pure gratitude. Then he bent down and pressed a soft kiss on my belly.
“We love you,” he whispered. “So much.”
Tears rolled down my cheeks as I held him, my heart fuller than it had ever been.
When we told the kids, the house exploded with joy.
Rudra stood stunned before grinning wide.
Mannat hugged me tight.
Ramir shouted in excitement.
Kayan and Kavya smiled with eyes full of wonder.
A new heartbeat had joined our family.
And for the first time, I wasn’t afraid.
I was ready.
