Chapter 21: The Crack Beneath the Crown

The moment the penthouse door closed behind them, the silence exploded.

Poornima turned.

And slapped him.

The sound echoed sharply through the room—raw, broken, furious.

“Why?” her voice shook as much as her hand. “Why did you do this, Veeresh? You had no right. No right to touch my life again.”

He didn’t stagger. He didn’t even blink.

Instead, he stepped closer, eyes dark, unreadable.

“You belong to Veeresh,” he said, his voice low and certain. “Even if I break you. Even if I ruin you. You’re still mine.”

Her chest tightened painfully.

“That’s not love,” she whispered, tears spilling freely now. “That’s cruelty.”

He cupped her face suddenly, thumb brushing away a tear that refused to stop. His touch was familiar—too familiar—and her body reacted even as her heart screamed.

“Listen to me,” he said, jaw clenched. “Don’t cross the line by thinking of leaving. Or running. Or choosing anything else.”

His hand slid to her waist, firm, possessive.

“You’re mine. Only mine.”

And then he kissed her.

For a split second, her body remembered. The past surged—dance floors, whispered claims, stolen moments that once felt like love.

But this time—

She didn’t respond.

She stood there, unmoving, lips cold beneath his, heart locked away behind pain he himself had carved into her.

Veeresh pulled back slowly.

Something flickered across his face—confusion, irritation… maybe even hurt.

She was crying now, silently, shoulders trembling.

“I loved you,” she said softly. “Even after you destroyed me. And that’s what you took from me—the ability to trust you ever again.”

For the first time, Veeresh had no answer.

He stepped away.

Went straight to the balcony.

The night air hit him as he lit a cigarette, smoke curling upward like the thoughts he refused to face. The city glittered below—power, control, success—all things he had mastered.

Except her.

Behind him, Poornima sank onto the couch, wrapping her arms around herself as if holding together what remained. She was here. Bound by a name, a thread, a moment of madness.

But something inside her had shifted.

She was no longer the girl who surrendered.

And for the first time since this all began, Veeresh realized—
breaking her had not made him whole.

It had only exposed the fracture within himself.

Smoke drifted into the night.

And neither of them knew which of them would survive what came next.
