Chapter 6: Scores and Silences

The board exams came and went like a storm.

Early mornings.
Late nights.
Pens moving faster than thoughts.

Classrooms smelled of ink and nervousness. Heads bent low. Teachers watched like silent guardians of fate.

Veeresh wrote with clarity—answers precise, time managed perfectly. Not rushed. Not unsure. He left each exam hall knowing he had given everything.

Poornima wrote with calm determination. No panic. No second-guessing. She trusted the preparation she had built day by day. When the final bell rang, she closed her paper gently—like finishing a chapter she was proud of.

Then came the waiting.

One month of suspended breath.

When the results were announced, the school courtyard filled instantly. Names pinned on the notice board. Students pushing forward. Cheers, gasps, silence.

Veeresh Devraj — 1st Rank.”

Applause erupted.

Teachers smiled knowingly. Students nodded—expected.

A few lines below—

Poornima Rathore — 2nd Rank.”

Neha screamed first.

“You did it!” she shouted, grabbing Poornima’s arm.

Yashwanth leaned over the board, scanning again. “Second rank. That’s huge.”

Sirisha smiled softly, eyes shining. “I knew you would.”

Poornima stared at the paper for a moment longer.

Not searching for Veeresh’s name.

Just absorbing her own.

A quiet smile touched her lips.

“I’m happy,” she said simply.

Neha frowned. “But you were so close to first.”

Poornima shook her head. “He was never my competitor.”

Her friends fell silent.

“My competition was me,” she continued calmly. “And I did better than yesterday’s version of myself.” She exhaled. “That’s enough.”

Neha’s eyes softened. “That’s my girl.”

Sirisha hugged her tightly. Yashwanth joined in, laughing. “Second rank queen.”

They laughed together—light, free.

A few steps away, Veeresh Devraj stood unnoticed.

He had already seen his name.

He had already accepted the applause.

But now—he heard her words.

He was never my competitor.

No bitterness.
No jealousy.
No excuse.

Just truth.

Veeresh looked at her—really looked at her—for the first time without pride clouding his vision.

And something shifted.

He turned away quietly.

Not in victory.

In thought.

Because for the first time, someone hadn’t measured their worth against his success.

And Veeresh Devraj realized—

Poornima Rathore wasn’t running behind him.

She was running beside herself.

And that changed everything.
