Chapter: The Question That Mattered

That night, Poornima couldn’t sleep.

Her room was quiet, but her mind wasn’t.

Her friends’ voices echoed—

“You’ll be loved there.”
“It will take time, but it’ll be worth it.”

Then her parents’ words followed, sharper—

“Don’t accept.”
“You’ll ruin relationships.”
“You’re just a restaurant owner.”

She closed her eyes.

Her phone buzzed.

Veeresh:
Can we meet? I need to talk.

She stared at the screen for a long moment.

Then she replied: Okay.

They met outside, away from people, under soft lights and quiet air.

Veeresh didn’t waste time.

“My answer is yes,” he said simply.

Poornima inhaled slowly.

She looked straight at him—no anger, no softness. Just truth.

“I have one question,” she said.
“And I need an honest answer.”

He nodded.

“Ask.”

Her voice shook, but she didn’t stop.

“If someday you get angry… or disappointed…”
“Will you insult me for my colour—like my family did?”

His expression changed instantly.

“And will you ever mock my profession?” she continued.
“Say I’m just a cook. That what I do is small.”

She swallowed.

“Because if that happens…”
“I won’t survive it.”

Silence stretched between them.

Veeresh stepped closer—but not too close.

“I won’t,” he said quietly.

Not loudly.
Not dramatically.

“I respect you,” he continued.
“Your work. Your choices. Your strength.”

He looked at her steadily.

“If I ever hurt you,” he said,
“I’ll apologise. I’ll learn. I’ll change.”

“But I will never break you for things that made you who you are.”

Poornima’s eyes filled.

“And if your family insults me?” she asked softly.

Veeresh didn’t hesitate.

“Then they’ll answer to me.”

She searched his face for doubt.

There was none.

Still, she whispered,
“I’m scared.”

“I know,” he replied gently.
“And I’m not asking you to decide today.”

He paused.

“But if you choose me—
you’ll never stand alone again.”

Poornima looked away, breathing unevenly.

For the first time, someone wasn’t promising perfection—

Only presence.

And that scared her more than anything.
