Chapter: Small Steps

Veeresh walked into Mannat Inn like he belonged there now.

Poornima was near the kitchen, speaking calmly to her workers, giving instructions with quiet authority. She noticed him from the corner of her eye.

He lifted his hand slightly, signaling.

“I’m coming,” she said, finishing her sentence before walking toward him.

Veeresh had already taken a seat at a corner table.

She sat opposite him, her apron still on, her hands faintly smelling of spices and warmth.

“How do you want the wedding?” he asked, softly.

Poornima thought for a second.

“You decide.”

He searched her face.

“You’re sure?”

“I am.”

“I want it simple,” Veeresh said.

“Just family. No show.”

She nodded.

“Let’s go for it.”

Relief flickered across his face.

He opened his tablet and slid it toward her, showing a few wedding outfits he had shortlisted.

She looked carefully, not rushing.

“These are good,” she said finally.

Veeresh smiled—genuine, boyish.

“I was hoping you’d like them.”

Then he added, a little hesitant,

“Be ready by 8 p.m. tonight. I want to introduce you to my investors and collaborators. They’ve invited us.”

Poornima met his eyes.

“Okay.”

No hesitation. No fear.

Veeresh ordered his usual meal. He ate quietly, comfortably, like this was already part of his routine.

When he stood to leave, he paid the bill despite her protest.

Before going, he leaned down and kissed her cheek, gentle and familiar.

“Bye,” he said.

“Bye,” she replied softly.

As the car pulled away, Veeresh leaned back, a small smile on his lips.

She chose what I chose, he thought.

Maybe… everything will be alright between us.

And for the first time since the engagement,

his heart felt calm.
