Chapter 18
A Quiet Acceptance
After Veeresh left for the office, silence settled again in the mansion.
Poornima was about to walk back to her room when a calm voice stopped her.
“Poornima… beta, come here.”
She turned.
It was .
His tone was not authoritative this time.
It was gentle.
She walked closer, adjusting her saree pallu respectfully.
He gestured for her to sit.
“I owe you an apology,” he said slowly. “This house never welcomes its daughter-in-law like this. You deserved rituals, blessings, celebration.”
Poornima immediately shook her head. “Uncle, please—”
He raised his hand softly, stopping her.
“I know,” he said, understanding her unspoken words. “I know this marriage did not happen in normal circumstances.”
Her eyes widened slightly.
He knew.
More than she expected.
“I may not know every detail,” he continued, “but I know my son. He does nothing without a reason. And if he married you, there is something deeper.”
There was no accusation in his voice.
Only quiet observation.
“And whatever that reason is… you are now our daughter-in-law. That is enough.”
Poornima felt something loosen inside her chest.
Acceptance.
Not dramatic.
Not loud.
But real.
Ajay continued, “I am happy for Inayat. That child hasn’t smiled like this in a long time. She is comfortable with you.”
A faint smile touched Poornima’s lips.
“She calls me mumma,” she said softly, almost shy.
Ajay nodded. “And she needs that. So don’t hesitate.”
He leaned back slightly.
“You are free in this house. Study, work, pray, rest… whatever you wish. No restrictions.”
Her eyes filled.
No one had said that to her before.
“And beta,” he added gently, “focus on your health. Give birth to a healthy baby. The rest… we will handle.”
Poornima lowered her gaze.
“Uncle… thank you.”
He smiled faintly.
“If ever you feel alone here, come to me. This house has enough silence. It doesn’t need more misunderstandings.”
For the first time since entering the mansion, Poornima felt like she wasn’t entirely alone.
There was at least one door in this house that wasn’t closed.
One line:
Where Veeresh built walls, his father quietly opened a door for her.
