Chapter 41

Guilt Between Promises

The river had gone silent, but was still restless.

“Poornima…” his voice was lower now, fragile in a way he never allowed anyone to see. “Am I cheating Akash?”

The question did not come from jealousy.
It came from loyalty. From a promise made beside a hospital bed.

looked at him carefully. She understood that this was not about love — it was about guilt.

“No, Veeresh,” she said softly. “We are not cheating him.”

He looked at her, searching for certainty.

“You promised him you would protect me. You did. You gave me safety when I had none. You gave my child a name. You gave Inayat a mother’s warmth. If something grew between us… it was not planned. It was not betrayal.”

Her fingers slowly intertwined with his.

“I also don’t know when you and Inayat became my happiness. I was drowning in pain. I thought my life ended with Akash. His memories will always stay with me. They are a part of my past… and I respect that.”

She paused.

“But life doesn’t stop at a grave, Veeresh. Life forces you to move forward. It teaches you to breathe again. To feel again. Sometimes through people we never expected.”

His jaw tightened. “But he trusted me.”

“And you are not breaking that trust,” she replied firmly. “You are honoring it. He wanted me safe. He wanted his child safe. He didn’t ask you to freeze your heart forever.”

Her voice softened.

“Love is not betrayal when it grows from pain. It is healing.”

For the first time, the guilt in his chest felt lighter.

He closed his eyes and exhaled slowly, as if releasing a weight he had been carrying since that hospital room.

She rested her forehead against his.

“We are not cheating him,” she whispered again. “We are surviving.”

One line:
Wafa ka matlab sirf yaadon mein jeena nahi… kabhi kabhi aage badhna bhi hota hai.
