Chapter 56
His Word, Her Shield
Silence filled the hall as everyone waited for to respond.
He didn’t look confused.
He didn’t look doubtful.
He looked furious.
“My wife would not have done this,” he said firmly, stepping in front of Poornima. “He misbehaved with her. That’s why she hit him. It was self-defence.”
The officer narrowed his eyes. “And how are you so sure?”
Veeresh didn’t hesitate.
“Because I saw it myself. I went to check on her. I saw her kick him and tell him to stay away.”
Poornima’s breath stopped for a second.
He came looking for her.
He saw.
He chose her.
The man tried to argue, but Veeresh’s voice carried authority — calm, controlled, powerful. Within minutes, the police turned toward the man instead.
He was arrested.
They apologised for the misunderstanding and left.
The noise of the party slowly returned, but for Poornima everything felt distant.
“Veer… I’m sorry. Because of me—”
He immediately cupped her face.
“Don’t say sorry, Kincsem.”
His tone softened but his eyes were fierce.
“I’m proud of what you did. You didn’t freeze. You didn’t cry and wait. You fought back. That’s strength.”
She looked at him, overwhelmed.
“If you had killed him,” he added darkly, “I’d know how to make the body disappear.”
She gasped softly, and he almost smiled.
“But listen to me,” he continued more gently. “I don’t care about society, parties, people. I care about you. About our babies. You’re my woman, Kincsem. And I trust you.”
That word.
Trust.
It wrapped around her like protection.
In that moment she understood — this wasn’t just responsibility.
This was acceptance.
This was choosing her without a second thought.
He pulled her into his chest, one hand resting protectively over her belly.
And she realised… she was no longer afraid.
One line:
