Chapter 10 – Distance That Speaks

The morning light spread softly across the room, carrying a quiet calm that hadn’t been there the previous days.

Gayathri slowly opened her eyes.

For a moment, she didn’t move. Her gaze shifted gently—and stopped.

Ravi was asleep beside the bed, his head resting against the side, one arm still placed protectively near her, as if even in sleep he hadn’t completely let go.

On the other side, Inayat was curled up close to her, holding onto her saree like it was her safest place.

Gayathri watched them both in silence.

Something in her chest felt… different.

Not pain.

Not completely.

Something softer.

She slowly sat up, careful not to wake them. Her eyes lingered on Ravi for a second longer than she expected.

“He stayed…” she thought quietly.

Without disturbing them, she got down and went to freshen up. By the time she returned, Inayat had woken up, rubbing her eyes sleepily.

“Mumma…” she mumbled.

Gayathri smiled faintly and lifted her gently. “Good morning, baby.”

Soon, the room began to move with quiet routine again.

Ravi woke up a little later, instantly alert the moment he realized Gayathri wasn’t beside him. His eyes quickly found her across the room, helping Inayat get ready.

For a brief second, he just watched.

Then he got up without saying anything and went to get ready himself.

A little while later, all three of them walked downstairs together.

The atmosphere in the hall was calmer than before, but still carried an unspoken tension.

Gayathri stood there for a moment, gathering courage.

Then she spoke.

“Papa…” she called softly.

Devraj looked up immediately. “Yes, beta?”

Gayathri hesitated for a second, then said, “I… want to go home for a few days.”

Ravi, who had just reached the last step of the staircase, paused.

His eyes moved to her.

“And I want to take Inayat with me,” she added gently.

Silence followed.

Devraj studied her face carefully. “Are you sure?” he asked. “You’re not fully well yet.”

“I know,” she replied softly. “But… I need some time. Just a few days.”

Devraj nodded slowly. “Alright, beta. If you feel it will help, you can go.”

Then he added, “If you need anything, call me. Or Ravi… he will come immediately.”

Gayathri gave a small nod.

Ravi didn’t say anything.

He simply turned and walked away.

Gayathri turned to go upstairs, but before she could reach her room, Ravi’s voice stopped her.

“You didn’t feel like asking me?”

She turned back slowly.

Ravi stood a few steps behind her, his expression calm—but his eyes said otherwise.

“When your health is not good, you just decide and inform?” he continued, his tone controlled but sharp. “Is this how a relationship works?”

Gayathri didn’t respond immediately.

“I know you’re not accepting this marriage,” he added, taking a step closer, “but still… don’t you think you should at least talk to me before making decisions like this?”

“Ravi…” she started softly.

But he didn’t let her finish.

“Go,” he said, his voice tightening slightly. “I’ll join you in the evening.”

There was anger in his tone.

But beneath it—

Something else.

Something she didn’t fully understand.

He turned and walked away before she could say anything further.

Gayathri stood there for a moment, her thoughts tangled.

She didn’t know what to feel.

Guilt.

Confusion.

Or something deeper she wasn’t ready to name.

A while later, she packed her things quietly.

Inayat followed her around, asking small questions, unaware of the emotional weight behind everything.

“Mumma, are we going on a trip?” she asked excitedly.

Gayathri smiled faintly. “Just for a few days, baby.”

Once everything was ready, they left the mansion.

The penthouse felt completely different when they entered.

It was quiet.

Peaceful.

Familiar.

The moment the door opened, two excited figures came running.

Thor and Simba rushed toward them, their tails wagging wildly.

“Inayat laughed instantly. “Thor! Simba!”

She bent down and hugged them, while Gayathri crouched beside her, gently running her fingers through their fur.

“I missed you both,” she whispered softly.

The dogs circled them happily, as if sensing their need for comfort.

For the first time in days—

Gayathri smiled without forcing it.

After some time, exhaustion caught up with her.

She lay down on the bed, pulling Inayat close to her.

“Sleep for a while,” she said gently.

Inayat nodded and snuggled into her.

Thor settled near the bed, while Simba lay close to the door, both quietly guarding.

The room was silent.

Safe.

Gayathri closed her eyes slowly.

Her mind wasn’t racing anymore.

The noise had reduced.

The pain hadn’t disappeared—

But it had softened.

And as sleep slowly took over—

For the first time in a long time—

She didn’t feel alone.
