Chapter 17 – What She Needed Was Different
The morning light slipped quietly into the room, soft and undisturbed. Ravi woke up slowly, his senses adjusting before his eyes moved instinctively toward Gayathri.
She was still asleep.
Her face looked calmer than the previous night, but there was a tiredness that hadn’t left her yet. His hand was still resting near her, close enough to feel her presence.
Ravi carefully moved, making sure not to disturb her, and got up from the bed. He paused for a second, looking at her once more, then walked toward the washroom.
After freshening up, he stepped out, adjusting his sleeves—and stopped.
Gayathri was awake.
She was sitting up on the bed, her hair slightly messy, her expression quiet but not as broken as before.
For a brief moment, their eyes met.
“Good morning, Gayu,” Ravi said, his tone softer than usual.
“Good morning,” she replied, her voice calm.
He nodded slightly. “From tomorrow, I’ll be working from home.”
She looked at him, a little surprised.
“But today I have to go to the office,” he added.
She gave a small nod. “Okay.”
There was no awkwardness.
No hesitation.
Just a quiet understanding settling between them.
Gayathri got up and went to freshen up while Ravi moved around, getting ready. By the time they both came out, Inayat was already up and waiting for them.
Soon, all three of them sat together for breakfast.
It wasn’t loud.
It wasn’t forced.
It was… normal.
Inayat ate happily, occasionally talking about random things, while Gayathri listened, responding softly. Ravi watched them both, not saying much, but noticing everything.
After breakfast, Inayat ran off to play with Thor and Simba, her laughter echoing lightly through the house.
Ravi stood near the table, watching Gayathri for a moment before stepping closer.
“Gayu,” he called.
She looked up.
“Don’t think about anything,” he said, his voice calm but firm. “Just… be cool. Don’t let your mind go back there again.”
She held his gaze for a second, then nodded. “I’ll try.”
He studied her face, making sure she meant it.
“I’ll be back early,” he said.
Before she could respond, he leaned forward and placed a soft kiss on her forehead.
It wasn’t rushed.
It wasn’t hesitant.
It was… reassuring.
Then he stepped back and left.
Gayathri stood there for a moment after he went, her hand unconsciously moving to her forehead.
Something about that simple gesture stayed.
The day moved quietly at the penthouse.
Gayathri sat on the floor with Inayat, watching her play with Thor and Simba. Every now and then, Inayat would pull her into the game, and Gayathri would respond with small smiles, trying—slowly—to stay present.
At the office, Ravi walked into his cabin, his mind already shifting between work and home.
But today—
It wasn’t the same.
He sat down, leaned back slightly, and stared at the table for a moment before picking up a file.
The door opened without a knock.
Veeresh walked in, casual as always, but his expression changed the moment he saw Ravi.
“How is she, bhai?” he asked directly.
Ravi didn’t answer immediately.
He placed the file down.
“Not good,” he said finally.
Veeresh frowned and walked closer. “What happened?”
Ravi leaned back in his chair, exhaling slowly, then began.
He told him everything.
Not in bits.
Not casually.
Everything.
Gayathri’s past.
Rakesh.
Her father.
Rehan.
The accusations.
The pregnancy.
Her breakdown.
Her words from the previous night.
He didn’t leave anything out.
By the time he finished, the room had gone silent.
Veeresh stood there, processing it all, his expression shifting from shock to anger.
“Rehan…” he muttered, running a hand through his hair. “How could he even think like that… accuse her like that…”
Ravi’s jaw tightened slightly. “He believed her later.”
“After making her prove herself like that?” Veeresh shot back. “That doesn’t make it right, bhai.”
Ravi didn’t respond.
Because he agreed.
After a moment, he said, “I asked her if she wants to abort.”
Veeresh looked at him immediately.
“And?” he asked.
“She said no,” Ravi replied.
There was a brief pause.
Then Ravi added, quieter this time, “But she’s not happy with the pregnancy.”
Veeresh let out a breath and sat down opposite him.
“Of course she won’t be,” he said.
Ravi looked at him.
“It’s not coming from love, bhai,” Veeresh continued, his tone more serious now. “It’s coming from doubt… from pressure… from everything she went through.”
Ravi’s fingers tapped lightly against the table as he listened.
“Every woman talks about this phase like it’s beautiful,” Veeresh said. “But that’s when it comes with happiness… with trust… with support.”
He leaned forward slightly.
“With Gayathri, it’s different,” he said.
Ravi’s gaze didn’t shift.
“She didn’t get any of that,” Veeresh added. “For her, it’s not just a pregnancy. It’s tied to everything that hurt her.”
Silence settled between them.
Ravi leaned back slowly, absorbing it.
“She feels like it’s a burden,” he said quietly.
Veeresh nodded. “Because she hasn’t separated her pain from it yet.”
Ravi looked down for a moment, his thoughts aligning.
“Then that’s what needs to change,” he said.
Veeresh watched him carefully.
“You can’t force her to feel happy,” he said. “But you can make her feel safe enough… that she stops associating everything with fear.”
Ravi nodded slightly.
“I know.”
A pause.
Then Veeresh added, softer this time, “She doesn’t need fixing, bhai.”
Ravi looked up.
“She needs someone who doesn’t make her feel wrong for what she feels.”
Ravi didn’t respond immediately.
Because that—
He understood.
Completely.
He leaned back in his chair, his expression calmer now, but more focused.
“Then that’s what I’ll do,” he said.
Not as a plan.
Not as an idea.
But as a decision.
And this time—
He wasn’t questioning it.
