Chapter 26 – What We Feel Now

The restaurant was warm, filled with soft lights and quiet conversations. Gayathri sat across from Ravi, Inayat beside her, happily talking about random things while playing with the spoon in her hand. Ravi watched them both, his expression calm, a quiet contentment settling in him.

This time, Gayathri wasn’t distracted.

She wasn’t tense.

She was present.

And it showed.

“Gayu…”

She turned.

Rakesh stood there again.

But this time—

Nothing froze inside her.

No fear.

No panic.

Just… familiarity.

“Hi,” she said, standing up naturally, a small smile on her face.

Ravi looked at her.

Really looked.

And he saw it.

The difference.

“How are you?” Rakesh asked.

“I’m good,” she replied, her voice steady.

There was no hesitation.

No looking at Ravi for reassurance.

Just… calm.

“This is Ravi,” she said again, but this time with ease, and gestured toward Inayat. “And this is Inayat.”

Ravi stood up and nodded. “Hey.”

Rakesh smiled. “Good to see you again.”

Then he turned slightly. “Actually… I wanted you to meet someone.”

A girl stepped forward, standing beside him.

“This is my fiancée,” he said.

Gayathri’s expression softened instantly.

“Hi,” she said warmly.

The girl smiled back, polite and friendly.

“We’re getting married next month,” Rakesh added, a hint of happiness in his voice. “You both should come.”

Gayathri didn’t hesitate.

“Of course,” she said, genuinely. “Congratulations.”

There was no weight in her words.

No past pulling her back.

Just… happiness.

Ravi watched her for a second, then added, “We’ll be there.”

Rakesh nodded, smiling. “It was nice seeing you.”

“You too,” Gayathri said.

And just like that—

He left.

But this time—

Nothing stayed behind.

No fear.

No memory haunting her.

Just closure.

Dinner continued.

Simple.

Light.

Inayat talked endlessly, and Gayathri laughed along with her, responding easily. Ravi didn’t interrupt, but his eyes stayed on her more than once.

“She’s different now,” he thought.

Not broken.

Not holding back.

Just… herself.

When they reached home, the night felt calm.

Inayat had already fallen asleep on the way, and Ravi carried her inside, laying her down carefully.

Gayathri changed and came back, her face relaxed, her mind quiet.

She sat on the edge of the bed, looking at Ravi for a moment before speaking.

“Ravi…”

He looked up.

“I’m happy for him,” she said.

There was no confusion in her tone.

No hidden emotion.

Just… truth.

Ravi nodded, a small smile forming. “Good.”

She watched him for a second longer.

Then her voice softened.

“Ravi… thank you.”

He didn’t respond immediately.

She continued, her words slower now, more personal.

“For everything,” she said. “I don’t know how to explain it… but…”

She hesitated for a second.

Then said it anyway.

“I like you.”

The words stayed in the air.

Raw.

Honest.

She quickly added, a little nervous now, “Don’t think wrong of me…”

Ravi didn’t let her finish.

He stepped closer and cupped her face gently.

“Stop saying sorry and thanks,” he said quietly.

Her breath hitched slightly.

“I like you too,” he added.

Her eyes softened instantly, a smile forming without effort.

Before she could say anything else—

Ravi leaned in and kissed her.

Not hesitant.

Not unsure.

Deep.

Certain.

Gayathri froze for a second—

Then responded.

Her fingers moved to his shirt, holding onto him as she kissed him back, matching his intensity, her emotions finally flowing without fear, without confusion.

It wasn’t rushed.

It wasn’t forced.

It was… felt.

Everything they hadn’t said.

Everything they had held back.

All of it met in that moment.

When they finally pulled away, their breaths uneven, Ravi looked at her.

A faint smile curved on his lips.

Gayathri’s eyes didn’t leave his.

And this time—

Neither of them looked away.
