Chapter 14: The Moment Everything Changed

Poornima sat still.

The weight of the red lehenga pressed against her skin, the veil covering her face making her world feel smaller, quieter… suffocating.

She could hear everything.

The priest’s voice.
The whispers.
The restless movements.

“Bharat has not arrived yet…”

Each word echoed louder inside her than outside.

Her fingers tightened slightly over the edge of her dupatta.

Calls were being made.

Again.

Again.

No answer.

Her father’s voice, slightly strained.
Her mother’s worry, barely hidden.

People started murmuring.

“What is happening?”
“Why isn’t the groom here?”

Her heart should have panicked.

But it didn’t.

Instead…

There was a strange stillness inside her.

A quiet thought she didn’t want to admit.

What if… this stops?

The thought scared her.

But it also… gave her a breath she didn’t know she needed.

Her eyes lowered further beneath the veil.

She didn’t move.

Didn’t speak.

Didn’t react.

Because she didn’t know what she was allowed to feel.

Then—

Lakshmi’s voice.

“Bhaiya…”

Poornima’s heart skipped.

She didn’t look up.

But she listened.

“Will you give Poornima’s hand to Veeresh?”

Everything inside her froze.

For a second, she thought she heard wrong.

Veeresh?

Her breath hitched.

Her fingers went cold.

The world around her blurred, but that one name stayed clear.

She slowly lifted her eyes… just enough to see through the veil.

He was there.

Standing.

Still.

Silent.

Shocked.

Her heart started beating faster.

Not out of fear.

Not completely.

Something else.

Something unfamiliar.

Lakshmi’s voice continued, steady, filled with a strange certainty. “My son is cold… but he will never hurt Poornima.”

Those words reached her.

Deep.

Because she knew.

She had seen that side of him.

The silence.

The care without words.

The way he made sure no one questioned her.

The way he rested his head on her lap like that was his only place of peace.

Raju uncle agreed.

Voices continued.

But Poornima wasn’t hearing them clearly anymore.

Her world had narrowed down to one thing.

Him.

Raju asked him.

“What do you say?”

The silence that followed felt endless.

Poornima’s heart was loud now.

Too loud.

She didn’t know what she wanted him to say.

She didn’t know what she herself wanted.

But she knew one thing.

If he said no—

Everything would go back.

To Pavan.

To that life.

To that suffocation.

Her breath became uneven.

And then—

“Alright.”

Her eyes widened slightly.

Her heart stopped for a second.

Then started again.

Faster.

“But the marriage will happen according to me.”

His voice was calm.

Firm.

Unshaken.

That was him.

Always.

A strange warmth spread in her chest.

Not happiness.

Not yet.

But relief.

A quiet, fragile relief.

Her fingers loosened slightly.

For the first time in days—

She could breathe.

She didn’t smile.

She didn’t react.

But inside…

Something shifted.

Something heavy… lifted just a little.

Her eyes lifted again, searching him through the veil.

He didn’t look at her.

He stood there, composed, distant, like this was just another decision.

But she knew.

He wouldn’t have said yes… lightly.

And somehow—

That mattered.

The priest started speaking again.

People started moving.

Everything was adjusting.

But Poornima sat there, still, absorbing what had just happened.

Her wedding.

Her life.

Had just changed.

In a moment.

Without her saying a single word.

And yet…

For the first time—

She didn’t feel trapped.

She didn’t know what this new path meant.

She didn’t know what kind of life this would be.

But one quiet truth settled inside her heart—

He won’t hurt me.

And for now…

That was enough.
