Chapter 29: The Word That Stayed
Veeresh stood in the balcony, the night air brushing past him, but it did nothing to calm what was running inside his mind.
The cigarette burned slowly between his fingers.
He took a drag.
Held it.
Let it out.
But the heaviness didn’t leave.
Replacement.
The word stayed.
It didn’t come from someone else.
It came from him.
And now it refused to go.
He leaned against the railing, his eyes fixed somewhere far, but he wasn’t seeing anything in front of him.
He was replaying everything.
The wedding.
The moment.
The decision.
Not planned.
Not chosen.
Given.
He clenched his jaw slightly.
He had said yes.
But why?
Duty?
Situation?
Or something else he didn’t want to name?
He took another drag.
His mind moved to her.
Poornima.
The way she looked at him.
The way she stayed.
The way she understood without asking.
His grip tightened slightly.
If she was just adjusting… just accepting because she had no choice—
Then what was he?
A place to settle?
A situation to manage?
A man she had to live with?
The thought didn’t sit well with him.
Not at all.
Because somewhere—
He didn’t want that.
He didn’t want to be someone she tolerated.
He wanted to be chosen.
Even if he never said it.
Even if he never asked.
His eyes closed for a second.
Her face came to his mind.
The way she had kissed him back.
The way she held him when his head hurt.
The way she didn’t leave… even when he pushed her away.
Even when—
His fingers paused.
The slap.
His jaw tightened harder.
He opened his eyes immediately.
The guilt came sharp.
Unwanted.
He looked at his own hand for a second.
He had never—
He exhaled deeply, frustration mixing with regret.
And still—
She stayed.
No anger.
No fear.
Only calm.
Only understanding.
That unsettled him more.
Because it meant something.
Something real.
And real things…
Scared him.
He took one last drag and crushed the cigarette.
But the thoughts didn’t stop.
Her words came back.
“I have accepted you.”
Accepted.
Not forced.
Not adjusted.
Accepted.
And then—
“Don’t think you are my replacement.”
His breathing slowed slightly.
He leaned back, looking up at the night sky.
There was a difference.
Between being there…
And being wanted.
He didn’t know where he stood yet.
But for the first time—
He wanted to find out.
Not through questions.
Not through words.
But through her.
Through the way she stayed.
Through the way she chose.
Again and again.
The night remained silent.
But inside him—
Something had shifted.
The word “replacement” was still there.
But now—
It didn’t feel as certain as before.
