Chapter 22: The Beginning of Something Real

He pulled her closer.

Closer than before.

Her body stiffened for a second, surprised by the sudden movement, her hand instinctively pressing against his chest.

Before she could say anything, he leaned in.

His lips brushed against her cheek.

Soft.

Then along her jaw.

Unhurried.

She froze.

Completely still.

Her breath caught, her eyes widening slightly.

He stopped just enough to look at her.

“Kiss,” he said.

She blinked, shocked.

“Fast, Poornima.”

Her heart started racing.

She hesitated for a second, then slowly leaned forward, aiming to kiss his cheek.

But just as she moved—

He turned his face.

And her lips met his.

For a second, everything stopped.

Her eyes widened.

Her breath stilled.

Her first kiss.

She didn’t pull away immediately.

She couldn’t.

He smiled against her lips, a faint, satisfied smile.

And something inside her melted.

Completely.

She relaxed into him, her hand slowly gripping his shirt, her eyes closing for a brief second.

A warmth spread through her.

Not fear.

Not confusion.

Just… happiness.

Quiet.

New.

Real.

He pulled back slightly, still holding her.

“You freshen up,” he said calmly. “I have work from home.”

She nodded, still processing everything.

Slowly, she got up and walked toward the washroom.

Once inside, she closed the door and leaned against it.

“My first kiss…” she whispered to herself.

A smile spread across her face.

She touched her lips lightly, her cheeks warming again.

For the first time…

She felt something she didn’t question.

She freshened up and came out, wearing a simple blue saree.

Her hair neatly done, her face fresh, but her eyes still carrying that soft glow.

By then, he had gone to freshen up.

She quietly arranged his formals on the bed, setting everything properly without being asked.

Then she went downstairs.

The house felt normal again.

She went straight to the pooja room and prayed, her hands folded, her mind calmer than before.

Lakshmi noticed her and smiled.

“How was the night?” she asked softly.

“Ma…” she said, slightly shy, lowering her gaze.

Lakshmi smiled knowingly.

“Beta, I’ve made breakfast,” she said. “You make something sweet. It’s your pehli rasoi. You should serve everyone.”

Poornima nodded. “Okay.”

She went to the kitchen.

Prepared kheer carefully, stirring slowly, adding the right amount of sugar, making sure everything was perfect.

Her hands were steady.

Her mind focused.

Once done, she served breakfast to everyone.

Moving from one person to another.

Calm.

Graceful.

When she reached him—

He looked at her.

Just once.

And gave a small eye signal.

Sit.

She understood.

Without a word, she placed the bowl aside and sat beside him.

Close.

Quietly.

And for the first time in all of this—

She didn’t feel out of place.
