Chapter 15: The Quiet Between Us
They reached home late, the night calm, the house already settled into silence.
Veeresh parked the Bullet and they walked in together, their steps slower now, carrying the warmth of the evening with them.
As they entered the room, he placed his keys aside and looked at her.
“You sleep, Noor,” he said gently. “I have an exam… I’ll study for some time and join you.”
Poornima nodded, then paused. “Do you want tea?”
He shook his head lightly. “No… I don’t drink all those things.”
She looked at him, a little confused.
“I’ll have green tea,” he added casually. “I can make it… you don’t worry.”
There was something in the way he said it, simple, independent, not expecting her to do everything.
“I’ll be in my study room,” he said, picking up his books.
Before leaving, he leaned forward and pecked her lips softly.
“Sleep.”
And just like that, he walked away.
Poornima stood there for a moment, watching him leave, the door of the study room closing quietly behind him.
The room felt different without him.
Not empty…
But noticeable.
She sat on the bed slowly, her fingers unconsciously touching her bracelet again.
Her mind replayed the evening…
The way he said Mr. and Mrs. Veeresh.
The way he held her hand.
The dance.
The kiss.
And now…
Him studying.
Focused.
Determined.
“I want to become a Chartered Accountant.”
She smiled faintly.
“You will,” she whispered softly to herself.
Lying down, she pulled the blanket over herself, but sleep didn’t come immediately.
Instead, she listened.
The faint sound of pages turning from the other room.
A chair moving slightly.
Silence… then again the sound of studying.
It felt… comforting.
Like he was there.
Like she wasn’t alone.
After a while, her eyes slowly closed.
Time passed quietly.
Much later, the study room door opened softly.
Veeresh walked in, careful not to make noise, his steps light.
He looked at her, already asleep, her face calm.
A small smile appeared on his lips.
He kept his books aside and lay down next to her, pulling her gently closer.
Even in sleep, she moved slightly toward him.
He rested his head against her chest, his arms around her.
“Noor…” he murmured softly.
And within seconds…
He slept too.
