Chapter 16: A Distance That Felt New

Morning came with a different kind of quiet, one that didn’t feel as warm as the previous days.

Poornima walked downstairs after getting ready, her saree neatly draped, her hair still slightly damp, when her mother-in-law called her.

“Beta, today is pag phera rasam,” she said gently. “Your appa called… he will come to pick you up.”

Poornima paused for a second, then nodded softly. “Okay, Ma.”

From the corner of her eye, she noticed Veeresh.

He didn’t say anything.

But something in his expression shifted.

A small silence.

Then he turned and walked upstairs without a word.

Poornima watched him go, a faint uneasiness settling in her chest.

Inside the room, Veeresh was arranging his books, a little more quickly than usual, his movements slightly restless.

She stepped in quietly. “You’re getting late…”

He didn’t reply immediately.

Instead, he turned suddenly, walking straight toward her, closing the distance in a second.

Before she could react, he pulled her close and kissed her deeply, passionately, as if trying to say everything at once.

Poornima held onto him, surprised, yet not pulling away.

When he finally parted, his forehead rested against hers.

“I will miss you, Noor,” he said softly.

Her eyes softened.

“I’ll come to meet you… at the hospital,” he added, his voice steadier now.

She nodded, a small smile forming.

Then she lifted her hand and kissed his forehead gently.

“Okay.”

That was enough for him.

He picked up his bag, looked at her one last time, and walked out.

The sound of his Bullet echoed again…

And this time, it felt different.

Poornima stood there for a moment, her fingers unconsciously touching her lips where he had kissed her.

Later, her father arrived.

“Beta…” he called warmly.

She walked toward him, greeting him softly, but her mind… was somewhere else.

As she sat in the car beside him, her gaze drifted outside, but her thoughts stayed behind.

She missed him.

His warmth.

The way he slept on her chest like it was the safest place in the world.

The way he called her…

“Noor.”

A faint smile appeared on her lips.

She realized something then.

She hadn’t even thought of herself as Poornima for a while.

She had become…

His Noor.

She remembered his small habits.

The way he pecked her lips before sleeping.

The way he held her without asking.

The way he said things like they were already decided.

“I’ll come to meet you…”

Her smile deepened slightly.

At least she knew one thing.

This distance…

Wasn’t empty.

Because he was coming back to her.

And with that quiet comfort resting in her heart…

Poornima went with her father.
