Chapter 30
Veeresh’s POV

I didn’t move from where I stood.

There was no need to.

Everything I needed to understand was happening right in front of me.

Rayesh pulled her along, excitement still written all over his face, introducing her to his batchmates one by one.

“This is my akka,” he said, pride clear in his voice.

Poornima smiled.

Not the polite smile she gives in staff rooms.
Not the controlled one she uses in class.

This one was different.

Warm. Open. Real.

She spoke to them easily, laughing lightly at something one of them said. They stood together, taking pictures, capturing moments that clearly meant something more than just a ceremony.

And I watched.

Not with that usual pull to interrupt.

But quietly.

Understanding.

Rayesh didn’t leave her side.

Even in the middle of his own achievement, his eyes kept going back to her, like he needed to make sure she was there.

And every time he looked—

He smiled.

Like her presence was enough.

At one point, he hugged her again.

Tight.

Unfiltered.

And I saw it.

The tears.

He didn’t hide them.

Didn’t try to act strong.

Not in front of her.

And Poornima—

She held him the same way.

Steady.

Grounding.

Like she had always been that for him.

That’s when I noticed something else.

No parents.

No other family.

Just her.

Only her.

I listened without meaning to when one of his friends asked, “Where’s your family?”

Rayesh didn’t hesitate.

He smiled and said, “She is my family.”

A pause.

Then, more softly—

“She’s my second mom.”

Something shifted in my chest.

I looked at Poornima.

Her eyes had softened again, pride shining through, but this time there was something deeper in it.

Fulfillment.

Like in this one role—

She had everything she ever wanted.

And he meant it.

Every word.

She wasn’t just his sister.

She was the one who showed up.
The one who stayed.
The one who filled the space others left empty.

And for the first time—

I understood the weight she carries.

Why she doesn’t expect.
Why she doesn’t ask.
Why she doesn’t believe.

Because she gave everything she had…

Right here.

To him.

And yet—

She never received the same from where she should have.

I exhaled slowly.

Not heavy.

Not frustrated.

Just… aware.

My gaze stayed on her as she stood beside him, smiling, proud, complete in that moment.

And something in me settled.

I wasn’t competing with anyone.

Not her past.
Not her pain.

I just had to be…

Someone who stays.

Because watching them—

I realized something simple.

Poornima doesn’t need grand promises.

She needs presence.

And I can give her that.

Without leaving.

Without breaking.

For the first time—

I didn’t feel restless.

I felt clear.

And as I watched her laugh softly with her brother—

I knew one thing for certain.

This…

Is exactly why I chose her.
