Chapter 43
Poornima stood in the dining area, looking at the long table for a moment before she began arranging everything, not randomly but with quiet precision, remembering each preference the maids had told her. “Rakesh bhai sits here, ma’am,” one of the maids said, pointing to the head side, and Poornima nodded, placing the dal tadka, jeera rice, and paneer butter masala exactly near that seat. “Ritika ma’am here,” the maid added, and Poornima placed phulkas, aloo methi, and kheer beside it.
She moved without confusion, placing biryani, mirchi ka salan, and chicken curry near Nitin’s seat, then veg pulao and raita for Ruhi, fries and dal chawal in smaller portions for Vedant, halwa kept carefully for Aradhya. On the other side, she arranged mutton curry near Rahul’s place, dosa batter ready in the kitchen for Ragini with chutney set aside, noodles kept for Reyansh, and simple soft food for little Sri Devi. Everything had a place. Everything had a person.
The maid hesitated before saying, “Devki maa eats in her room.”
Poornima paused for a second, then nodded. “I will take hers first.”
She prepared a tray herself, carefully placing everything, and walked upstairs. When she reached the room, she knocked softly before stepping in. Devki looked at her, calm but distant. “Veeresh’s wife?” she asked.
Poornima gave a small nod. “Yes… maa,” she said gently, placing the tray down. “Please have this. It’s my first rasoi today.”
Devki watched her for a moment, then gave a slight nod. “Okay. God bless you.”
Poornima smiled faintly, not forcing anything, and quietly stepped out.
She went back downstairs, her steps steady, and looked at the table once more before turning toward the hall. “Please come for dinner,” she said, her voice calm but clear.
One by one, they gathered and took their seats.
Veeresh stood a little behind, his eyes fixed on her.
Gayathri Devi took the first bite.
Silence.
Everyone waited.
Then she looked up, her expression unreadable for a second before she said, “Good.”
It was simple.
But enough.
Rakesh nodded slightly while eating. “This is well balanced.”
Ritika smiled. “The kheer is perfect.”
Nitin added, “Spicy… just right.”
Ruhi looked at Poornima warmly. “You made all this?”
The kids didn’t wait for words—Vedant was already eating, Aradhya happily focused on halwa, Reyansh busy with noodles.
Slowly—
The table filled with approval.
Poornima didn’t react much.
She just stood there, quietly.
But Veeresh saw it.
The way she had done everything.
Without asking.
Without showing pressure.
And for the first time since entering that house—
The space had shifted.
Because she didn’t try to fit in.
She simply… took her place.
