Chapter 44
The dinner didn’t end with silence—it shifted into something lighter, softer, as plates were set aside and conversations slowly began, and Poornima stood there for a moment before Ritika got up first, walking toward her with a small smile. “You didn’t just cook… you understood everyone,” she said, placing a neatly wrapped box in Poornima’s hands. “This is for you.”
Poornima looked at her, a little surprised. “You didn’t have to—”
“I wanted to,” Ritika replied simply.
Rakesh followed, his expression calm but approving. “Welcome to the family,” he said, handing her a gift.
Nitin came next, a faint grin on his face. “Didn’t expect this level,” he admitted, passing her his gift, while Ruhi stepped forward beside him. “You made my favourite exactly how I like it,” she said warmly, giving Poornima a soft hug before placing another box in her hands.
Rahul nodded at her. “Impressive,” he said shortly, handing over his gift, and Ragini smiled gently, adding hers. “You handled everything so easily.”
Then came the kids—
Vedant ran toward her first. “This is for you,” he said proudly, giving her a small wrapped packet.
Aradhya followed, holding something slightly crooked. “I like your halwa,” she said seriously, placing it in Poornima’s hands.
Reyansh came next, a little shy but smiling. “Noodles were nice,” he muttered, handing over his gift, while little Sri Devi just held Poornima’s saree pallu and laughed, making everyone smile.
Poornima stood there, holding everything, a little overwhelmed but not showing it fully, her expression calm, her eyes softer now.
Then—
Silence shifted again.
Gayathri Devi stood up.
Everyone looked at her.
She walked toward Poornima slowly, her steps measured, her eyes fixed on her, and for a moment, no one spoke, because this wasn’t expected. Not from her.
Poornima straightened slightly.
Gayathri stopped in front of her and opened a small velvet box. Inside—gold bangles. Traditional. Heavy.
A pause.
Then—without asking, without handing them over—Gayathri took Poornima’s hand herself.
And slid the bangles onto her wrist.
One.
Then the other.
The sound of the metal settling into place echoed softly in the quiet room.
Everyone watched.
Shocked.
Because she didn’t do this.
Not for anyone.
Gayathri looked at Poornima for a moment after that, her expression still composed, but her voice held something different now. “A daughter-in-law who understands the house… deserves to wear its respect,” she said.
Poornima didn’t speak immediately.
She just looked at the bangles on her wrist.
Then at Gayathri.
And gave a small nod.
Not submission.
Not victory.
Just… acceptance.
Across the room—
Veeresh exhaled slowly.
Because he understood what just happened.
And so did everyone else.
