Chapter 21: In the Middle of His World
Morning light slipped quietly into the room, and Poornima opened her eyes slowly, the first thing she felt… was him.
His arm around her.
His head resting close.
She turned slightly and looked at him, sleeping peacefully, like nothing in the world could disturb him.
A soft smile appeared on her lips.
“Blessed…” she whispered to herself.
Her eyes moved around the room and then stopped at her heels, placed neatly aside.
She remembered…
“He removed them…”
That thought stayed with her longer than she expected.
She carefully moved out of his hold, not wanting to wake him, and went to freshen up.
When she came back, her eyes fell on his purse lying on the edge of the bed.
She picked it up to place it properly on the table, but as she did, it opened slightly.
Something caught her attention.
Her photo.
Inside his wallet.
Poornima paused.
Her fingers touched it gently, a smile forming without effort.
“He keeps me…” she thought softly.
She closed it carefully and placed it back.
Then she walked toward him and sat beside him.
“Veeresh…” she called softly.
He stirred, his eyes opening slowly, and the moment he saw her…
“Good morning, Noor,” he murmured, his voice still sleepy.
She smiled. “Good morning.”
He sat up, and like always, without thinking, he reached for the sindoor and filled her maang gently.
No words.
Just habit.
Just… them.
They went downstairs and had breakfast together, simple, quiet, comfortable.
“Ma and Papa went to the village,” he said casually.
She nodded.
After breakfast, he went straight to his study room, books already in his hands, his focus shifting instantly.
Poornima watched him for a moment.
The same boy…
But so different.
She cleaned the room quietly, arranging things, folding clothes, setting everything in place, her movements carrying a calm she hadn’t known before.
Then she went to the kitchen and prepared lunch.
Carefully.
Just the way he liked.
When it was ready, she took the plate and walked to his study room.
He was sitting there, completely focused, pen moving, eyes fixed on his books.
She stood at the door for a second.
“Lunch,” she said softly.
He looked up instantly.
“Noor…”
He kept his pen aside and gestured her in.
Instead of taking the plate, he pulled her gently closer and made her sit on his lap.
She looked at him, slightly surprised.
“Sit,” he said simply.
She didn’t argue.
He took a bite and held it toward her.
“Open.”
She smiled faintly and ate.
Then she fed him back.
Back and forth.
Simple.
Quiet.
Real.
After finishing, he didn’t let her move.
“Sit… or sleep,” he said, adjusting slightly.
Poornima leaned into him, her head resting against his chest.
She didn’t realize when her eyes closed.
She fell asleep.
Right there.
In his arms.
Veeresh adjusted himself carefully, one hand holding her securely while the other moved back to his book.
He continued studying.
Focused.
Steady.
After a while, he looked down at her.
Sleeping peacefully.
A soft smile appeared on his lips.
He leaned down and pecked her lips gently.
Then looked at her again…
And smiled.
