Chapter 20: A Yes That Carried Fear

Syed looked at Veeresh for a long moment after hearing his words.

Then slowly, his expression softened.

“Thank you, beta,” he said quietly.

It was not just gratitude.

It was trust, given carefully.

Veeresh nodded slightly, acknowledging it without making it heavy.

“We can conduct the marriage in both styles,” he added calmly. “There will be no problem from our side.”

Syed appreciated that immediately. It was not just about agreement. It was about respect.

Before the conversation could continue, Ayesha walked in, holding a small bowl.

“Kheer,” she said gently, offering it to Veeresh.

He accepted it with a slight nod. “Thank you.”

As he took a spoonful, a small figure appeared near the doorway.

Aryan.

He stood there quietly, watching.

For a moment, he hesitated.

Then his eyes met Veeresh’s.

A small smile formed on his face.

Veeresh noticed it.

And without thinking, he smiled back.

It was brief.

But real.

A simple exchange.

A child’s warmth meeting a man who was not used to it.

After a few more moments of polite conversation, Veeresh stood up.

“I will take your leave,” he said.

Syed nodded. “We will speak soon.”

Veeresh gave a final glance around the house, then walked out.

Calm.

Steady.

As if everything was already moving toward a direction he had chosen.

Inside the house, the air changed once he left.

Quieter.

Heavier.

Syed turned toward Poornima, who had been standing silently all this while.

“Beta,” he said gently, “what do you feel?”

Poornima looked at him.

For a moment, her eyes held too many things to speak.

Fear.

Hurt.

Confusion.

And something she was trying to hide.

“Abbu,” she said softly, “if you feel it is right… then go ahead.”

Her voice did not resist.

But it did not agree fully either.

It simply… gave in.

Syed frowned slightly. “This is your life. I need your answer, not your surrender.”

Poornima’s lips trembled for a brief second.

Then she spoke again.

“Do not ask me,” she said quietly. “Because if you ask me honestly… I do not know what to say.”

The truth came out.

Raw.

Unprotected.

She took a step closer to him.

“But promise me something,” she added.

Syed’s expression softened. “Tell me.”

“After the marriage,” she said, her voice breaking slightly, “you will not cut my relationship with you.”

Her eyes filled with tears again.

“I cannot lose you also, Abbu.”

That sentence carried everything she was holding back.

Syed’s heart tightened.

He moved closer and placed his hand on her head.

“Never,” he said firmly. “You will always be our daughter first.”

A tear slipped down Poornima’s cheek.

Not loud.

Not dramatic.

Just… quiet.

Because sometimes,

A yes is not happiness.

It is simply the courage to step into something unknown,

While holding on to the only things that still feel safe.
