Chapter 26: A Small Word That Changed Something

The room was quiet when Poornima entered.

Soft lights, neatly arranged space, everything in its place.

Nothing felt unfamiliar.

And yet, everything did.

She closed the door gently behind her and stood there for a moment, taking a slow breath.

Then she walked toward the table and poured herself a glass of water.

Her hands trembled slightly as she lifted it.

She drank slowly.

As if trying to steady herself.

Before she could sit down, the door opened again.

Aryan walked in, his small steps careful, his eyes searching only for her.

“Ammi,” he said softly.

Poornima turned immediately.

He came closer, holding a small strip of tablets in his hand.

“Your tablet,” he said.

For a second, she just looked at him.

Then her expression softened completely.

She bent slightly and took it from his hand.

“Thank you,” she whispered.

She took the tablet, then gently held his face for a moment.

“You remembered.”

He nodded proudly.

Aryan looked around the room for a moment, then back at her.

“Ammi,” he asked, his voice filled with curiosity, “what should I call him?”

The question came so simply.

So innocently.

But it carried weight.

Poornima paused.

Her fingers tightened slightly around his hand.

Then she said quietly,

“Whatever your heart tells you.”

Aryan thought for a moment.

Not long.

Then he looked up at her again.

“Abbu,” he said.

The word was soft.

But it filled the room.

Poornima’s eyes softened instantly.

A faint smile appeared on her lips.

She did not correct him.

She did not stop him.

She simply nodded.

“Go sleep now,” she said gently.

Aryan nodded, but before leaving, he asked one more question.

“Ammi, Mannu likes me?”

Poornima smiled a little more this time.

“Yes,” she said. “Because you are her brother.”

Aryan’s face lit up.

“Really?”

“Yes.”

He seemed satisfied with that.

Then he added, almost as if confirming something important,

“We can still visit Dadi and Dada?”

Before Poornima could answer, a voice came from behind.

“Yes, you can.”

Both of them turned.

Veeresh stood near the door.

He had entered quietly.

Too quietly.

Poornima’s expression changed for a brief second.

She did not know how long he had been there.

How much he had heard.

Aryan looked at him, then smiled.

“Thank you, Abbu,” he said, without hesitation.

The word came naturally.

Without fear.

Without doubt.

Veeresh looked at him for a moment.

And then,

A small smile appeared on his face.

Not forced.

Not controlled.

Real.

“You should sleep now,” he said calmly.

Aryan nodded and walked out of the room, satisfied, peaceful.

The door closed behind him.

Silence returned.

But it was not the same silence as before.

Poornima stood there, unsure, aware that something had shifted.

She looked at Veeresh.

But he did not say anything.

He simply turned slightly, as if giving her space.

And in that quiet moment,

Neither of them spoke.

But both of them knew,

Something had just changed

Without either of them planning it.
