Chapter 27: Quiet Boundaries
The silence lingered in the room after Aryan left.
It was not uncomfortable.
But it was aware.
Veeresh walked a few steps closer, his gaze resting on Poornima’s hand for a moment, then shifting to the strip of tablets she had just kept on the table.
“What tablet is that?” he asked.
His tone was not intrusive.
Just direct.
Poornima hesitated for a second, then answered honestly.
“Iron supplement,” she said softly. “Ferrous ascorbate. The doctor advised after… everything.”
She did not complete the sentence.
She did not need to.
Veeresh nodded once.
He did not question further.
“Change,” he said after a moment, his voice calm. “You will be more comfortable.”
Poornima looked at him briefly, then nodded.
She took her clothes and walked toward the washroom.
A few minutes later, she came out wearing a simple saree.
No heavy jewelry.
No bridal weight.
Just herself.
Veeresh was standing near the window, his back partially turned.
When he heard her, he turned.
His eyes paused on her for a second.
Not assessing.
Not judging.
Just noticing.
He walked closer.
Without saying anything, he gently took her hand.
Poornima froze slightly at the touch.
His fingers turned her palm upward.
His gaze settled on the mehendi.
The intricate design.
And within it, his name.
Hidden.
But there.
His thumb brushed lightly over it.
A quiet acknowledgment.
Then his hand moved upward, and he gently lifted the edge of her pallu.
Poornima’s breath caught for a second.
Not out of fear.
But out of unfamiliarity.
From his pocket, he took out a delicate waist chain.
Simple.
Elegant.
He tied it carefully around her waist.
His movements were slow.
Measured.
Respectful.
Once done, he stepped back slightly.
“Do not remove it,” he said.
His voice was calm.
Not commanding.
But firm.
Poornima looked down at it for a moment.
Then nodded.
“Okay.”
There were no more words after that.
No expectations.
No pressure.
Just quiet understanding.
Later, when they lay down on the bed, Mannat was placed gently between them.
The small child slept peacefully, unaware of the lives shifting around her.
Poornima lay on one side.
Veeresh on the other.
A distance between them.
But not empty.
Just… waiting.
The night passed without more words.
Without more actions.
But in that stillness,
Boundaries were set.
And something fragile,
Something unspoken,
Began to exist between them.
