Chapter 31: A Night That Softened Edges
Veeresh stood there, still holding her hand, but his grip had loosened now.
“Then you should also listen to me,” he said, his voice calmer.
Poornima looked at him, her breathing steadying.
“I am listening to you,” she replied.
He nodded slightly.
“Good.”
A small pause followed.
Then he said quietly, “Thank you for everything.”
The words were simple.
But they were real.
He looked at her again and added, “And please do not call me gadha in front of everyone.”
For the first time in that moment, a faint spark returned to her eyes.
“I will call you gadha,” she said.
Without hesitation.
Without fear.
Veeresh looked at her for a second, then let out a small breath.
“Okay,” he said. “Do what you want.”
There was no argument in it.
Only acceptance.
He stepped back slightly.
“From tomorrow, you are joining work?” he asked.
“Yes,” she said.
Her tone was steady.
Certain.
“I will visit my mom also,” she added. “And I am taking Mannat with me.”
Veeresh nodded.
“You can.”
That was all.
No restriction.
No condition.
She did not wait after that.
She turned and walked downstairs.
The house was filled with a calm evening energy now.
Poornima went straight to the kitchen.
She prepared dinner carefully, remembering what each person liked.
Simple dishes.
But made with attention.
With care.
When everything was ready, she served everyone.
Mannat sat comfortably in her lap, playing with the edge of her saree.
Poornima fed her in between serving others.
The table felt warm.
Lived.
Not forced.
Aryan finished his dinner and rubbed his eyes.
Sleep had already reached him.
Poornima took him upstairs.
She made him lie down, adjusting his blanket gently.
She leaned forward and kissed his forehead.
“Sleep,” she whispered.
Aryan held her hand lightly.
“Ammi, can you sleep here?” he asked.
She smiled softly.
“Yes.”
That was enough for him.
He closed his eyes and drifted into sleep within moments.
Poornima stayed there for a while.
Watching him.
Then she picked up Mannat again.
The baby stirred slightly.
“Hungry?” Poornima murmured softly.
She fed her once more, her movements slow and gentle.
“Mannu, slowly,” she said with a faint smile. “Hungry baby.”
Mannat made a small sound, almost like a giggle.
Poornima smiled.
She wiped her mouth carefully.
Then kissed her forehead.
“Sleep,” she whispered again.
Soon, Mannat also drifted off in her arms.
Poornima lay down beside Aryan, keeping Mannat close.
The room was quiet.
Peaceful.
A different kind of calm.
After some time, Veeresh entered the room.
He paused at the door.
For a moment, he just stood there.
Watching.
Poornima lying between the two children.
Both of them close to her.
Both of them sleeping peacefully.
He walked in slowly.
Without making a sound.
He lay down beside her.
Carefully.
As if not to disturb anything.
His arm moved instinctively.
Wrapping gently around her.
Poornima felt it.
A slight shift.
A presence.
Something unfamiliar.
For a moment, her body tensed.
Then slowly…
It relaxed.
She did not move away.
She did not react.
She simply closed her eyes.
And let sleep take over.
Because for that night,
There was no argument.
No distance.
No force.
Only a quiet closeness
That neither of them questioned.
