Chapter 37: A Lie Told to Protect Love
Evening returned to the house with its usual quiet rhythm, but something about Aryan felt different the moment he walked in.
He smiled when he saw Veeresh, a small smile, controlled, almost rehearsed.
Veeresh noticed it immediately.
Something was off.
But he did not press him in front of Poornima.
Poornima stepped forward first.
“Did you enjoy your day?” she asked gently.
Aryan nodded quickly.
“Yes, Ammi.”
His voice was light.
Too light.
“I will change and come down,” he added, already turning away.
Veeresh watched him carefully.
Then he said, “Come. Let’s go.”
Poornima looked at him and smiled slightly, unaware of the tension beneath the surface.
Veeresh led Aryan into the room and quietly closed the door behind them.
The moment the door clicked shut, the atmosphere changed.
Veeresh looked at him.
“Now tell me,” he said calmly. “What happened?”
For a second, Aryan stood still.
Then something inside him broke.
He started crying.
“Abbu,” he said through tears, “they teased me.”
Veeresh’s expression tightened instantly.
“They said… bastard,” Aryan choked. “They said you are not my real Abbu.”
His voice cracked.
“They beat me too.”
Veeresh did not speak immediately.
He moved closer and gently lifted Aryan’s shirt.
What he saw made his jaw tighten.
Marks.
Red marks.
Anger flashed in his eyes, but he controlled it immediately, not letting it reach the child.
Aryan wiped his face quickly.
“No one became my friend,” he said. “No one talked to me.”
His voice lowered.
“I told Ammi I was fine… I lied to her. Because she will be sad. I don’t want her to cry.”
That broke something quieter in Veeresh.
He pulled Aryan into a tight hug.
“Listen to me,” Veeresh said firmly, his voice steady but heavy with emotion. “You are my son. I did not give you birth, but you are mine.”
Aryan held onto him tightly, still shaking.
“I will speak to the school tomorrow,” Veeresh added.
Aryan looked up quickly.
“You promise, Abbu? You will tell everything?”
Veeresh nodded.
“Yes. I promise.”
Aryan hesitated for a second, then whispered,
“Don’t tell Ammi. She will get scared. She will cry.”
Veeresh looked at him for a moment.
Then nodded again.
“I will not tell her.”
Aryan’s shoulders relaxed slightly.
“I am sorry for lying,” he said softly.
Veeresh shook his head immediately.
“No,” he said. “You were protecting her. That is not lying.”
He pulled Aryan into another hug.
“You are my brave boy.”
Aryan slowly calmed down in his arms.
And for the first time that evening,
He smiled again,
Even if it was small,
Even if it was tired,
It was real.
