Chapter 38: Quiet Decisions
Aryan had finally fallen asleep.
The room was calm again, the kind of silence that only comes after tears have settled and a child’s breathing becomes steady.
Veeresh adjusted the blanket over him carefully, making sure he was comfortable.
Poornima stood near the door, watching both of them.
After a moment, she asked softly, “Veer, is everything okay?”
Veeresh turned toward her.
“Yes,” he said simply.
But Poornima’s eyes lingered on Aryan.
“He seems off,” she said gently.
Veeresh nodded slightly, already aware.
“I know,” he replied. “But don’t worry. Tomorrow I will drop him myself. He will be alright.”
There was confidence in his tone, but also something deeper.
A decision already made.
Poornima studied him for a second.
Then she nodded.
“Okay,” she said quietly.
A small pause followed.
She adjusted her saree slightly and added, “I will go to college and finish the formalities.”
Veeresh looked at her.
“Sure,” he said.
Then, after a brief silence, he added in a lower tone,
“Indirect way to spend some time with him also.”
Poornima stopped for a second.
Then a soft smile appeared on her face.
Not loud.
Not wide.
Just real.
She understood what he meant.
She did not argue.
She did not question.
She simply nodded and said nothing.
And in that silence,
Something unspoken passed between them.
A quiet agreement.
Not about distance.
But about showing up.
For the children.
For each other.
