Chapter 39: What They Faced Together

The next day began with quiet determination.

Poornima went to the college early. The corridors felt familiar, yet different, as if she already knew she was walking away from a part of her life.

She completed all her pending work carefully, not leaving anything unfinished. Papers were signed, responsibilities were handed over, and finally, she submitted her resignation letter.

The staff gathered around her.

Some tried to convince her to stay.

Some simply stood there, understanding her choice without questioning it.

The students felt it the most.

“Ma’am, you are leaving?” one of them asked, unable to hide the disappointment.

Poornima smiled softly.

“Yes,” she said. “But you all will do well.”

There were no long goodbyes.

Just quiet acceptance.

Meanwhile, Veeresh went to Aryan’s school.

His steps were firm as he walked into the principal’s office.

“I need to speak to you,” he said.

The principal nodded and asked him to sit, but Veeresh remained standing.

“My son is getting bullied here,” he said directly. “They are hitting him. Calling him names. Is this what you teach in your school?”

His voice was controlled.

But the anger beneath it was clear.

“If this continues, I will take legal action,” he added.

The principal immediately responded, “I am really sorry, sir. This will not happen again. We will take strict action and ensure his safety.”

Veeresh held his gaze for a moment.

“It should not,” he said.

After that, he went to Aryan’s class.

Aryan stepped out when he saw him.

Veeresh knelt slightly in front of him.

“Be strong,” he said.

Aryan nodded.

“Yes, Abbu.”

A small pause.

“I love you,” Aryan said softly.

Veeresh’s expression softened.

“I love you too, son.”

He placed a hand on his head.

“And you should always tell Abbu everything.”

Aryan nodded again.

“Okay.”

With that, he went back into his class.

Veeresh watched him for a moment before leaving.

He went to the company after that, but his mind stayed with the morning.

Back home, Poornima had returned.

The house felt quieter now without her college routine.

By evening, Aryan came back.

This time, his face was different.

He smiled.

A real one.

“I made friends,” he said happily.

Poornima’s eyes softened with relief.

She hugged him gently.

Later that night, Veeresh returned home.

He looked at Aryan, then at Poornima.

“You brought him up really well,” he said.

Poornima looked at him.

Then at Mannat.

“Shona will also grow up well,” she said softly. “Do not worry. We are there.”

Veeresh nodded slightly.

Then his expression turned serious again.

He looked at her.

“Poornima,” he said, “what happened with Aryan yesterday…”

Before he could continue, Poornima’s eyes filled.

“Veer,” she said, her voice breaking, “thank you.”

She wiped her tears quickly.

“I was worried about him. But you handled everything.”

Veeresh stepped closer and gently pulled her toward him.

“He is our son,” he said firmly.

Then he added, “He even apologized to me for lying. He said he did not want you to cry.”

Poornima closed her eyes for a second.

Her heart tightened at that.

“I am still worried,” she said softly. “What if he gets bullied again?”

Veeresh looked at her steadily.

“That can happen,” he said honestly.

Then his tone softened.

“But listen… he has to grow. He has to face things. He will fall sometimes. That is how he will become strong.”

He paused.

“And we are always there for him.”

Poornima nodded slowly.

“Yes,” she said. “You are right.”

Mannat, sitting nearby, smiled happily, unaware of the depth of the moment.

Poornima immediately turned to her.

“Shona,” she said lovingly.

Veeresh picked her up into his arms.

“Mumma ka shona,” he said softly, smiling at her. “Give me some time to spend with your mumma. Now she will always be with you.”

Poornima looked at him and shook her head slightly.

“Stop talking nonsense,” she said.

But there was no irritation in her voice.

Only a softness.

She took Mannat back gently.

“Shona, sleep,” she whispered.

Mannat leaned into her, comfortable and safe.

Within moments, she drifted off.

Veeresh watched them both.

Then he moved closer.

He wrapped his arm around Poornima gently.

This time, she did not hesitate.

She leaned slightly into him.

And in that quiet moment,

With their daughter asleep between them,

And their son safe in the next room,

They stood not as strangers anymore,

But as two people

Learning to hold the same life together.
