Chapter 17 Something Softer Between Them

Veeresh sat down beside her, the quiet of the room settling around them again.

Poornima was still holding the box, her fingers gently resting over the books and the watch, as if she was afraid they might disappear if she let go.

Before he could say anything, she suddenly leaned closer and pulled him into a hug.

It was quick.

Unplanned.

But tight.

“Thank you so much,” she said, her voice filled with emotion. “I did not expect this.”

Her grip tightened slightly.

“I thought… I thought I would not be able to complete my education.”

The words came out softly, but they carried everything she had been holding inside.

For a moment, Veeresh did not move.

Then slowly, his expression softened.

A small smile appeared on his lips.

Not because of pride.

Not because of what he had done.

But because of what it meant to her.

He placed his hand gently on her back, steadying her.

“You will,” he said quietly. “No one is stopping you.”

Poornima pulled back slightly, looking at him.

There were still traces of tears in her eyes, but this time they were not heavy.

They were lighter.

Hopeful.

She nodded faintly.

“I will,” she repeated, almost to herself.

Her fingers moved back to the box, touching the books again.

“You chose these?” she asked, glancing at him.

“Yes.”

“You know what I study?”

“I asked,” he replied simply.

That made her pause.

He had asked.

He had paid attention.

Something about that stayed with her.

A small smile formed again on her lips, softer this time.

“You are not what I thought,” she said without realizing it.

Veeresh looked at her, his expression unreadable for a brief second.

“And what did you think?” he asked.

Poornima hesitated.

Then she looked away slightly.

“Nothing good,” she admitted honestly.

That made him exhale quietly, a faint smile still there.

“Fair enough,” he said.

There was no offense in his tone.

Just acceptance.

The silence that followed was different again.

No anger.

No sharpness.

Just a calm pause where both of them were… adjusting.

Understanding.

Poornima leaned back slightly, still sitting close to him, the box resting carefully beside her now.

“Still,” she added after a moment, her tone regaining a hint of its earlier edge, “I will continue my revenge also.”

Veeresh raised an eyebrow slightly.

“I expected that.”

She looked at him.

“You should.”

A small smile played on her lips again.

And this time, he did not hide his.

Because for the first time…

Her fight did not feel like distance.

It felt like something that was slowly bringing them closer.
