Chapter 19 A Beginning She Chose

Morning arrived quietly, carrying a sense of normalcy that neither of them had expected so soon.

Poornima woke up early, the first light filtering through the curtains. For a moment, she lay still, adjusting to the calm. Then she got up, freshened up, and dressed in a simple kurta, her hair tied neatly, her face clear and composed.

When she stepped out, Veeresh was already awake.

They did not speak much.

But there was no tension either.

Together, they stood side by side and offered namaz, their movements now more in sync than before. This time, Poornima did not hesitate. She followed each step with quiet focus, her expression calm.

When they finished, they exchanged a brief glance.

Nothing was said.

But something was understood.

Downstairs, breakfast was already set.

Mr and Mrs Qureshi greeted them warmly.

“Good morning, beta,” Mrs Qureshi said with a smile.

“Good morning, maa,” Poornima replied, her voice soft but steady.

She bent slightly and took their blessings, her respect genuine, not forced.

Mr Qureshi nodded approvingly. “All the best for your first day back.”

Poornima smiled faintly. “Thank you.”

After breakfast, Veeresh picked up his keys, and Poornima followed him outside.

The car ride was quiet, but not uncomfortable.

The city moved around them, busy and alive, while inside, a strange calm settled between them.

When the car finally stopped, Poornima looked outside.

“Mount Carmel College, Bachelor of Political Science,” she said softly, almost to herself.

Then she turned toward him.

“Have a good day, Mr Qureshi,” she said, opening the door.

She paused before stepping out and added, with a hint of her usual tone, “I will call you to pick me up. Otherwise… I will hit you.”

Veeresh looked at her, a faint smile forming.

“Okay,” he said.

She nodded once, satisfied.

Then she stepped out of the car.

For a second, she stood there, adjusting her bag, looking at the familiar gates that once belonged completely to her life.

Now…

She was returning to it.

Not as the same person.

But not entirely different either.

She turned back slightly.

Veeresh was still watching her.

“Take care,” he said.

“Bye,” she replied.

And then she walked inside.

Her steps were steady.

Her back straight.

And for the first time since everything had changed…

She was walking toward something that was hers again.
