Chapter 23 The Silence That Stayed

Morning came with a quiet routine that had already begun to feel familiar.

Poornima woke up early, freshened up, and stepped out without a word. Veeresh was already awake. They did not speak much, but they moved in sync, as if their silence had learned a rhythm of its own.

Together, they stood for namaz.

No instructions this time.

No hesitation.

Just quiet, practiced movements.

But even in that shared moment, something was missing.

The ease.

The softness.

It had not returned yet.

After the prayer, Veeresh went to the kitchen.

He was not used to it.

Not in this way.

But he did it anyway.

Carefully, following what he remembered, adjusting things with more focus than he showed in anything else that morning.

Poornima came down a little later.

The breakfast was already set.

She sat down without looking at him.

He placed the plate in front of her.

She nodded faintly.

No smile.

No teasing.

No comment about salt or spice.

She simply ate.

Quietly.

Veeresh watched her once, then looked away, picking up his own plate.

The silence at the table was heavier than before.

Not angry.

Not loud.

Just distant.

After finishing, she stood up and picked her bag.

“I will drop you,” he said.

She nodded.

That was all.

The drive to the college passed in complete silence.

No questions.

No light conversation.

No arguments.

Just the sound of the road and the weight of unsaid words.

When the car stopped, Poornima opened the door.

She paused for a second.

Then said, “Pick me up in the evening.”

Her tone was neutral.

Straight.

No softness.

No playfulness.

She stepped out.

And walked away.

No “bye.”

No “have a good day.”

No “Mr Qureshi.”

Nothing.

Veeresh watched her go.

For a moment longer than necessary.

Something in his chest tightened slightly.

He had expected it.

But that did not make it easier.

He exhaled slowly and leaned back in his seat.

“She will talk,” he told himself.

Maybe not now.

But she would.

He started the car and drove toward the party office.

The city moved as it always did.

Busy.

Unbothered.

But inside him, something stayed unsettled.

Not because she was angry.

He could handle anger.

Not because she argued.

He had expected that too.

But this…

This silence.

This distance.

This absence of her voice.

It felt heavier than anything she had said before.

And for the first time…

Veeresh realized—

He did not want her to stay silent anymore.
