Chapter 39 The Words He Finally Said

The drive back home was quiet, but not heavy.

There was a strange warmth between them, something that had deepened after everything that had happened at the party. Poornima sat beside him, looking out of the window, but her mind was still replaying the evening.

His silence.

Their words.

The way he had looked at her.

When they reached home, neither of them rushed inside. For a moment, they just stood there, the night calm around them.

Then Veeresh spoke.

“Poornima.”

She turned toward him.

His expression was different.

Not the composed leader.

Not the calm man she had seen in public.

Just… him.

“I want to say something.”

She nodded slightly, her eyes fixed on him.

Veeresh took a step closer.

“Marrying you…” he paused, as if choosing his words carefully, “was the best thing that happened to me.”

Poornima blinked, slightly taken aback.

“I am happy,” he continued, his voice softer now, “that day… I did not say no.”

Before she could respond, he slowly went down on one knee.

The movement surprised her.

Completely.

“Mr Qureshi…” she whispered, confused.

But he didn’t get up.

He looked at her, his eyes holding a sincerity she had never seen so openly before.

“I am sorry,” he said.

Not rushed.

Not forced.

“I am sorry for everything.”

The silence around them deepened.

“I didn’t understand you,” he continued. “I didn’t see your pain the way I should have.”

His voice lowered slightly.

“But now I do.”

Poornima stood still, her heart beating faster, her hands slightly trembling.

Veeresh’s gaze never left hers.

“I need you, Poornima,” he said.

The words were simple.

But they carried everything.

“You are my calm in chaos.”

Her breath caught.

“I don’t need to worry about anything… if you are there,” he added quietly.

There was no pride in his voice.

No ego.

Only truth.

“I feel secure with you.”

That word stayed.

Secure.

Poornima’s eyes softened, her emotions rising all at once.

Slowly, she bent down in front of him, coming to his level.

Now they were face to face.

Close.

Equal.

She held his hands gently.

“You don’t have to kneel for me,” she said softly.

Her voice carried warmth.

And something deeper.

“I am already yours.”

Veeresh looked at her, something in his expression breaking and settling at the same time.

Poornima’s fingers tightened slightly around his.

“I was angry,” she admitted. “I hated you.”

There was no hesitation in her honesty.

“But somewhere…” she paused, her voice softening further, “I started understanding you.”

Her eyes didn’t leave his.

“And now…”

She took a small breath.

“I can’t imagine my life without you.”

The truth came out naturally.

Without fear.

Without holding back.

Veeresh’s grip on her hands tightened slightly.

Poornima gave a faint smile.

“You are not just my husband,” she said. “You are my home.”

The words settled between them.

Deep.

Real.

Unshakeable.

For a moment, neither of them moved.

Then Veeresh leaned forward and pulled her into a tight embrace.

Poornima wrapped her arms around him instantly.

No hesitation.

No distance.

Just closeness.

Just belonging.

And in that quiet night…

After everything they had been through…

They were no longer two people trying to understand each other.

They were two people who finally did.
