Chapter 42 What Stayed Unshaken

The tension in the house slowly settled after Poornima stood her ground.

Her parents, seeing her certainty and the way she held Veeresh’s hand without hesitation, had no choice but to step back.

“We are sorry,” her father said finally, his voice softer now. “It’s about our daughter’s life… we got worried.”

Mrs Qureshi nodded gently. “We understand. But trust is important.”

Poornima didn’t let go of Veeresh’s hand.

Not even for a second.

After a few more quiet words, her parents left.

The house returned to its calm.

But something had changed.

Something had strengthened.

Dinner was simple that night.

No heavy conversations.

Just quiet understanding.

Every now and then, Veeresh would glance at Poornima.

And she would meet his gaze.

Calm.

Steady.

Certain.

Later, in their room, the silence returned again.

But it wasn’t uncomfortable.

Veeresh sat on the edge of the bed, his hands resting on his knees, his thoughts still lingering on what had happened.

“Poornima,” he said after a moment.

She looked at him.

“You know… such controversies will happen in the future too.”

His voice was calm.

But real.

“This world… it is not simple.”

Poornima listened.

Without interrupting.

Without reacting immediately.

“I won’t always be able to explain everything instantly,” he added. “There will be accusations… misunderstandings.”

He looked at her.

“So…?”

He didn’t complete the question.

He didn’t need to.

Poornima stepped closer.

“I would still trust you, Mr Qureshi,” she said.

Her answer came without delay.

Without doubt.

He held her gaze.

“Don’t worry,” she continued. “If I ever feel anything…”

She paused slightly.

“I will ask you.”

Her voice was steady.

“Not others.”

The words were simple.

But they carried clarity.

Boundaries.

Respect.

Trust.

Veeresh looked at her for a long moment.

As if trying to understand how she could be this certain.

After everything.

“How?” he asked quietly.

Poornima smiled faintly.

“Because you never lied to me,” she said.

“And because…” she added, stepping even closer, “I know you.”

There was no argument in that.

No logic needed.

Just belief.

Veeresh exhaled slowly, something deep inside him settling again.

He reached for her hand and held it.

Tightly.

“Then I won’t give you a reason to doubt,” he said.

Not as a promise spoken loudly.

But as something he meant.

Poornima nodded once.

“I know.”

The room fell quiet again.

But this time…

It was not just calm.

It was strong.

Because between them now…

There was something that had been tested.

And had not broken.
