Chapter 44 When Memory Betrays
The waiting felt endless.
Minutes stretched into something heavier, something unbearable.
Veeresh stood outside the emergency ward, his eyes fixed on the door, his hands clenched tightly as if that alone could hold everything together.
Slowly, both families arrived.
Poornima’s parents rushed in, their faces filled with fear. Mrs Qureshi held onto her husband’s arm, her eyes already moist.
“What happened?” her mother asked, her voice shaking.
Veeresh did not answer.
He could not.
He just stood there.
Waiting.
After what felt like hours, the doctor finally walked out.
Everyone stood up at once.
“How is she?” multiple voices asked together.
The doctor looked at them, his expression serious but not hopeless.
“She is stable,” he said.
For a moment, relief passed through everyone.
But it did not last.
“She is not completely okay,” he continued. “There is severe head injury.”
The air shifted again.
“There is a possibility,” the doctor said carefully, “that she may have memory loss.”
Silence.
Complete silence.
“She might forget everything,” he added. “Or remember only parts. Maybe her parents. Maybe nothing at all.”
Poornima’s mother broke down.
Mrs Qureshi covered her mouth, unable to speak.
Her father stood frozen.
But Veeresh…
He did not react immediately.
He just stood there.
As if the words had not reached him.
As if his mind refused to understand.
Forget.
Poornima.
Forget everything.
Forget him.
Slowly, something inside him cracked.
His eyes closed for a brief second.
And suddenly, a memory surfaced.
A night.
A quiet road.
The sound of wind.
They had gone on a long drive.
Midnight.
The city asleep around them.
She sat behind him on his bike, her hands wrapped around him, her laughter soft and free.
They had stopped somewhere empty, just the two of them.
Talking.
Smiling.
Living in that moment.
He remembered asking her, half serious, half teasing,
“What if you forget me one day?”
She had looked at him, smiling so easily.
“You are there, right… to remember.”
And they both laughed.
Simple.
Carefree.
Like nothing could ever go wrong.
That memory shattered against the present.
Veeresh opened his eyes.
But this time…
They weren’t steady.
“They said she might forget,” his mind repeated.
Forget him.
Forget them.
Forget everything they built.
His breathing became uneven.
He stepped back slightly, his hand running through his hair, trying to hold onto something that was slipping away.
“She said I will remember for both of us,” he whispered under his breath.
But now…
What if he was the only one remembering?
What if she looked at him…
And saw nothing?
No anger.
No love.
No recognition.
Just a stranger.
That thought broke him in a way nothing else had.
For the first time…
Veeresh felt fear of losing her…
Even when she was still alive.
