Chapter 45 The Part She Forgot

The room was quiet when Poornima finally opened her eyes.

The faint beeping of the monitor filled the space, and the soft light made everything feel unreal.

She blinked slowly, adjusting to her surroundings.

Then she saw them.

Her parents.

Her face softened instantly.

“Amma…” she said, her voice weak but clear.

Her mother broke down in relief, rushing forward and holding her hand.

“Poornima…” she whispered, tears falling freely.

Her father stood beside her, his eyes filled with emotion.

Poornima smiled faintly at them.

But then…

Her eyes moved.

They searched the room.

They passed over Veeresh.

And stopped nowhere.

There was no reaction.

No recognition.

Veeresh stood there, still.

Watching.

Waiting.

Hoping for even a flicker.

But there was nothing.

His fear…

Had come true.

The doctor walked in after a moment, calm and professional.

“Poornima,” he said gently, “can you tell me your name?”

She looked at him without hesitation.

“Poornima Rajawat.”

The answer was clear.

The doctor nodded slightly.

“Are you studying?”

“Yes,” she replied. “BA Political Science, final semester.”

Another nod.

“Do you have any siblings?”

“Yes,” she said. “My sister.”

A small pause.

“She was going to get married.”

The doctor observed her carefully.

“Do you know his name?”

Poornima frowned slightly, thinking.

Then she shook her head.

“No… I don’t know.”

That answer was enough.

The doctor turned toward the others.

“Give us a moment,” he said.

Reluctantly, everyone stepped out.

Veeresh was the last to move.

His eyes remained on her.

But she did not look at him again.

Outside, the doctor spoke calmly.

“She remembers her parents,” he said. “Her studies. Her life before a certain point.”

Everyone listened, tense.

“But her memory of the marriage…” he paused slightly, “is completely gone.”

The words settled heavily.

“She does not remember Veeresh,” he added.

Silence.

Mrs Qureshi closed her eyes, unable to hold back her tears.

Poornima’s mother held her husband’s arm tightly.

And Veeresh…

He stood there.

Still.

Unmoving.

As if the world around him had faded completely.

She was alive.

She was safe.

But the part of her life that belonged to him…

Was gone.

Completely.

He swallowed hard, his throat dry.

“She doesn’t remember me,” he said quietly.

Not as a question.

But as a truth he was forced to accept.

For the first time…

He stood in front of the woman he loved…

And became a stranger to her.
