Chapter 46 A Stranger She Almost Knew
The hallway felt heavier after the doctor’s words.
Poornima’s parents looked at Veeresh, their eyes filled with helplessness.
“Beta… try talking to her once,” her father said softly.
The doctor nodded. “You can go. But do not stress her. Any emotional pressure can be dangerous. She might slip back into a coma.”
The warning was clear.
“And you might lose her.”
The words cut deep.
Veeresh nodded slowly. “Okay.”
His steps toward the room felt heavier than anything he had ever walked through.
He paused at the door for a second.
Then pushed it open.
Poornima lay on the bed, her face pale, her eyes slightly tired but awake.
Alive.
That alone should have been enough.
But it wasn’t.
Because when she looked at him…
There was no recognition.
No belonging.
Just curiosity.
He walked closer, each step careful.
“Poornima…” he said softly.
She looked at him.
“Hmm?”
“How are you feeling?”
“Pain… a little,” she replied honestly. Then she studied him for a moment.
There was a small pause.
“Your voice…” she said slowly, her brows knitting slightly, “it seems familiar.”
Veeresh’s breath caught.
“And I don’t know why.”
Those words hit him harder than anything else.
Familiar.
But not known.
Close.
Yet distant.
He forced a small smile, trying to keep himself steady.
“Maybe… you have heard it before,” he said gently.
Poornima kept looking at him.
As if trying to remember.
Trying to reach something that was just out of her grasp.
But she couldn’t.
A faint confusion passed through her eyes, then she let it go.
“Who are you?” she asked softly.
There it was.
The question he had feared the most.
Veeresh felt something inside him tighten painfully.
For a moment, he could not answer.
He had been everything to her.
Her husband.
Her home.
Her person.
And now…
He had to introduce himself.
“I…” he paused, his voice lowering slightly, “I am Veeresh.”
He didn’t say more.
He couldn’t.
Poornima nodded slowly.
“Okay…”
No emotion attached.
No connection.
Just acceptance of a name.
Veeresh looked at her, his chest heavy, his hands clenching slightly at his sides.
She tilted her head a little, still observing him.
“You seem…” she paused, searching for the word, “important.”
That broke him more than her not remembering.
Because somewhere inside her…
Something still knew.
But it wasn’t enough.
He looked away for a second, collecting himself.
Then back at her.
“I am,” he said quietly.
Not with pride.
Not with authority.
But with pain.
Because he was important.
He had been everything.
And now…
He was just someone she couldn’t remember.
