Chapter 50 Familiar Yet Unknown
The morning felt heavier than the night before.
Veeresh had barely slept, but he still went to the hospital early, as if being near her would somehow make things better.
Or easier.
Or less painful.
He paused outside her room for a moment before entering, taking a slow breath, preparing himself.
Then he stepped in.
Poornima was awake, resting against the pillow, her face still pale but calmer than yesterday.
Her eyes moved toward him.
No recognition.
But no distance either.
Just curiosity.
He walked closer, his steps slow.
“How are you feeling?” he asked softly.
“Okay,” she replied. “But… it hurts a lot.”
He nodded slightly, his expression gentle.
“It will get better.”
She watched him for a moment, studying his face like she had done before.
Then she spoke again.
“My sister told me something.”
Veeresh’s chest tightened slightly.
“She said… you were supposed to get engaged to my elder sister.”
There was a pause.
He felt it.
That old truth.
That complicated beginning.
He didn’t interrupt.
Poornima frowned slightly, confused.
“But then why this… confusion?” she asked. “And why do you…”
She stopped for a second, searching for the right words.
“Why do you look like you belong to me?”
The question was simple.
But it hit him deeply.
Because she didn’t remember.
But she still felt something.
Something that refused to disappear completely.
Veeresh looked at her.
And for a brief moment…
He smiled.
Not because it didn’t hurt.
But because…
She was still the same.
Honest.
Direct.
Unfiltered.
Just like before.
Even now…
She was saying exactly what she felt.
He stepped a little closer, his voice calm but carrying something deeper.
“There is no confusion,” he said softly.
Her eyes stayed on him.
“We got married,” he continued.
The words felt heavy.
But real.
“You and me.”
Poornima blinked, clearly trying to process it.
“Married…?”
“Yes.”
He didn’t look away.
Didn’t hesitate.
“You don’t remember it,” he added gently. “But it happened.”
She looked down for a moment, absorbing it slowly.
Then back at him.
“And you…?” she asked.
Veeresh exhaled softly.
“I am your husband.”
Silence.
The words settled between them.
Strange.
New.
Unfamiliar to her.
But everything to him.
Poornima didn’t react immediately.
She just looked at him again.
Carefully.
As if trying to match what she felt… with what he said.
“You don’t feel like a stranger,” she admitted quietly.
That was enough.
More than enough.
Veeresh’s eyes softened slightly.
“Because I am not,” he said.
His voice was steady.
But inside…
He was holding onto that one line she said.
You don’t feel like a stranger.
Because somewhere…
Even without memories…
Her heart still recognized him.
