Chapter 63 The Space Between Them
Poornima stood at the entrance of the Rajawat house, her parents beside her, their concern visible but quiet now.
She turned once before stepping inside.
Veeresh was still there.
Watching.
Not stopping her.
Because he understood.
Even if it hurt.
She gave him a small nod.
Not a goodbye.
Just… reassurance.
And then she went in.
The door closed.
And with that…
A silence followed him back.
When Veeresh returned home, the house felt different.
The same walls.
The same furniture.
The same room.
But empty.
He walked into their room slowly.
His eyes moved around.
Her things were still there.
Her presence… still felt.
But she wasn’t.
He sat on the edge of the bed, his hands resting on his knees.
For the first time since she had come back after the accident…
She wasn’t beside him.
That absence was loud.
“Beta…” Mrs Qureshi’s voice came softly from behind.
He didn’t turn immediately.
“She will remember you,” she said gently.
He exhaled slowly.
“Mom… I know she forgot me,” he said quietly.
Then he looked up slightly.
“But her heart didn’t.”
There was certainty in his voice.
“She still feels me.”
He turned now, his eyes calm but heavy.
“She is getting memories… again and again.”
His jaw tightened slightly.
“But every time she tries to remember…”
He paused.
“Her head hurts… severely.”
Mrs Qureshi’s expression changed, concern deepening.
Veeresh looked away again, his gaze falling back to the room.
“She is not staying away because she wants to,” he continued softly.
“She is doing it because she thinks it’s right.”
A faint, almost painful smile appeared.
“She could never leave me.”
The words were not possessive.
They were certain.
Rooted in what he knew of her.
Mrs Qureshi watched her son quietly.
There was no anger in him.
No frustration.
Only understanding.
And pain.
She stepped closer and placed her hand gently on his shoulder.
In her mind, a thought formed.
Poornima had changed their son.
Softened him.
Grounded him.
And even now…
Even when she didn’t remember him…
She was still protecting him.
Choosing his work.
His responsibilities.
Before herself.
Mrs Qureshi’s eyes softened.
“This girl…” she thought silently, “she loves him more than she understands.”
And maybe…
That love was strong enough.
To bring her back to him.
Completely.
One day.
