Chapter 40 — A Step Into a New Life
The ceremonies were finally over.
The chants had faded. The fire rituals completed. The blessings given.
Now only reality remained.
Poornima stood quietly near her brother before leaving, still dressed in her wedding attire that now felt heavier than before. The red lehenga moved softly with every step she took, but her expression remained uncertain.
Her brother stood beside her, guilt still lingering in his eyes.
“I know I was a bad brother,” he said quietly. “But… I hope you’ll be happy with him.”
Poornima looked at him for a long moment.
Then her expression softened slightly.
“I forgave you, bhai,” she said gently.
Her voice lowered.
“I just… don’t understand why he married me.”
A pause.
“I hope he won’t hurt me… or use me.”
That uncertainty stayed in her eyes longer than she wanted it to.
Across the hall, Veeresh stood with his family, speaking briefly with them, but his attention was not there.
It was always on her.
Even when she didn’t look at him, he was watching.
Observing.
Reading.
Protecting.
As if the entire world didn’t matter when she was in his line of sight.
Then Veeresh finally walked toward her.
Poornima felt his presence before she even turned.
“Time to leave,” he said calmly.
She looked at him once.
No argument.
No resistance.
Just quiet acceptance of the moment.
And like that—
Poornima Rathore stepped away from her past life.
Veeresh Dreewan offered his hand.
And she took it.
Together, they walked out of the venue with the Dreewan family, leaving behind the Rathore world, the ceremonies, the vows, and the confusion of everything she still couldn’t fully remember.
Outside, the night air felt different.
Heavier.
More real.
As the car doors closed and the convoy moved toward the Dreewan mansion, Poornima sat silently beside Veeresh.
And for the first time since everything began—
She wasn’t sure if she had entered a new life…
or stepped into something she still didn’t understand at all.
